Disclaimer: I don't own Martin Mystery. Believe me, if I did, Martin and Diana would not be brother and sister-step or otherwise.

Everybody assumed that the reason Martin always used his step-sister as the bait whenever they were on a mission was because he either found it funny or simply because she was handy. She was the weakest. The one that the villain would go after anyway, so why not just put her up for grabs? After all, it would definitely get the job done quickly. Hell, for the longest time that was what he assumed the reason was.

But he quickly learned the truth why. Well... quickly for Martin Mystery, that is.

The real reason why it was always her was because then he'd have more of a reason to get involved. If the only thing keeping him going on the mission was the safety of some stranger and his own interest, he would quickly grow bored and give up. Not to mention, he'd end up worrying so much over his brown haired step-sister that he'd realize it probably just wasn't worth it.

But the second Diana was involved or in danger, then it grew personal. All of a sudden he wouldn't be able to just back away because leaving her behind was simply not an option. People would suggest that that would be the smartest thing to do. She could take care of herself, she had proper training; the others did not.

That didn't matter to Martin though. If she was in danger, then the case would be solved no matter what, and she would be made safe again. Even if he had to get a bunch of innocent bystanders killed to do so.

A part of him wished he could come out and tell her this. Especially as she trembled in front of him, her arms clutched around her stomach as she was-once again-the bait. He wanted to yell out to her and comfort her, saying that it would be all right. That there was no way in hell he'd let anything happen to her. But he couldn't. Because if he did, then his feelings would be revealed and she would probably end up being more afraid of him then whatever she was trying to lure out.

"M-Martin?" Martin's heart crushed a bit at the sound of her trembling voice, "A-Are you there?"

He wanted to call out to her, but he couldn't. The monster had to come out and take her hostage, otherwise this mission would never get solved. He was at his boiling point. If he wasn't around when Diana got kidnapped, then he wouldn't know where to start when looking for her. And that was something he couldn't handle. If this went on much longer-Diana actually being safe, and him being on edge, needing to be there when she was kidnapped-then he would just break and demand that the girl be taken home already.

So, he just sat quietly as she called out her name, his heart breaking with every word. She should know she was safe. She should know he was there.

She should know that as far as he was concerned, leaving her was never ever an option.

BeBe: Eh, I had a much better version written in my head like, a month ago but completely forgot about it until now, when I started watching Martin Mystery again. This one is okay too, I suppose. Anyway, hopefully sometime within the next few weeks, I'll get the other Martin/Diana fic I'm currently planning up. Look for it.
