Author's Note: So this is a part of the beginning of "Fugue in Red" redone my way. I just can't help but wonder, in an alternate universe-y way, if in some ways he would will himself to forget. Just curious; not saying that really happened. I plan to do some other fics with that theme, so look out for them. I hope to get them out soon. Though in some ways this week's episode definitely did not disappoint. Flirting with Lisbon and Grace made me so happy! What did you all think? Enjoy!

Winding along, the flashlight beam twisting patterns in the leaves, Jane wonders how much longer he can take this. The long, tortuous dream tonight shook him tonight, more so than usual. Because this time, it actually ended, and Lisbon appeared out of the shadows to take his hand, away from it all.

So that when he woke and heard her voice, he somehow wondered for a second if she had read his mind. But it was just a case.

Another case. Did he even care anymore? Red John haunts his every step. He doesn't think he has much left to feel. But that isn't completely true.

He can see a lake. He begins to walk towards it.

He hopes she's following close behind, to make aimless conversation, to see her smile. Everything is turning upside down and with her the world stops spinning. Her eyes looking at him, watching him, caring for him. They can be quite beautiful, even...

He's dragged in, the world most definitely is murky and strange and he tries to breathe but he can't. Is this his punishment? Is this his chance to end this vile, mangled mess he's placed himself and his family and Lisbon into?

He fights with all his might, but the attacker is too strong.

Will she even be able to break free from the bindings that engulf her in his mess if he dies?

I wish I could pretend this web away. I wish I could alter the course I hurtled us down. I wish I could forget...

Darkness. Slicked back blond hair, closed eyelids, half floating in pitch-black waters.

The transformation he unknowingly wished for in the midst of life and death is completing itself right now.
