Okay, so this is my first story. I'm not really sure if I'm going to leave it as a one-shot or keep adding on to it. I would really appreciate some reviews so I know if it's good or bad. Thanks.

Glimpse Into Madness…

Cries echo throughout the streets at night, performing like a midnight symphony for my restless soul. He's become my phantom in the night.

I sometimes wonder if that's how he planned it. But it's doubtful given his aversion to plans. I still wonder though, all I know about him is from the papers his crooked smile stains, no telling if it's true or not. Those same papers call him a madman too, so they can't be true. He's not mad. He's not. He's a phantom singing in the dark for anyone who will listen and oh how I have been listening, like a moth drawn to the flame so am I drawn to him.

It's dark out now his symphony should be starting anytime now. At first it's faint but then grows louder. It's so close now. I decide to witness this symphony first hand, so I rush outside. When I'm out, smoldering ash greets me. It's wonderful. His latest symphony is a culmination of Gotham's every fear, of burning rage, of lust, and of freedom. It's all I can do not to squeal in childlike delight.

He sees me dancing around in his latest work. I don't notice him approach, only when he grabs my wrist. He slowly turns me towards him as my heart beats erratically. This is what I've waited for and he doesn't disappoint.

As I face him I get to peer into the madness that is his soul. The years of abuse, hate, betrayal, and death are etched into his irises. Along with something else I can't place. He doesn't give the chance though to place that last something though.

Because now my attention is drawn to the switchblade he's taken out of his pocket. I follow it as he makes it dance between between his fingers. It looks so pretty the way it shines in the night. After checking his reflection he grabs the back of my head and forces the blade in between my teeth. This is the moment I've been waiting for.

"Why so serious?" he asks.

I don't reply.

So he asks again, "Why so serious?"

My laughter echos through the hallow streets. I've finally placed that something. He sees it in my eyes and doesn't like it. So he now does what he does best. digging the blade deeper into both of my cheeks he gives me what I've been waiting for a permanent smile. He turns to leave.

I laugh again. How can I not? I got to become one of the bloody notes in his symphony. And I know his secret now. The secret behind that madness...
