The Game

If there was one thing Ootori Kyoya enjoyed more than profit, it was seeing a confused Haruhi. The way her brow crinkled was adorable, not that anyone would ever hear him voice that thought. The spark that lit her eyes was only seen when faced with a curious challenge. She gave him that look a lot. One of confusion and curiosity. He was one of the few people she hadn't figured out with one look, and he enjoyed presenting her with the challenge, being the one person who could still leave her baffled even after all of her training in law.

Whenever she had gotten close go figuring him out in the past he had done something to throw her off. Add debt, take it away, make a strange or misleading comment, something to keep her as ensnared in the game they had created as he was. He could remember the day he learned there was so much more to her than just being a blunt commoner; it was a day he was sure the entire club could remember. The day she slapped his father. Ootoori Yoshio was not one to be put in his place easily, so Kyoya was surprised when he didn't remain hostile towards the girl, even more surprised when his father paid for all of her education expenses for university.

Kyoya had decided one more surprise was in order before he could let their game run out, one more thing he almost felt would be wrong not to do. He had taken off work early that day, something that would have confused anyone who knew him; he was a workaholic at heart. Once his business partners had forced him to take time off due to the fact that he had accumulated almost more than a year's worth of vacation time.

"Simpai?" Haruhi asked shocked to see him at the door.

"Might I come in?" he asked, she felt like he was staring into his soul.

"Oh, um, sure. Please excuse the mess, my newest case is taking a lot more attention than I thought it would," she opened the door to her quaint apartment.

The club had tried to convince her to move into something better than her high school home, but to no avail. She chose and apartment that had almost the same lay out. Her argument was that she was one person and didn't need nearly the amount of space they seemed to think they did.

"It's quite alright, this shouldn't take too long," Kyoya entered and removed his shoes, "I have a question for you, it's been on my mind for a few weeks now and Tamaki all bit told me he would kill me if I kept putting it off.

She was shocked at his sudden appearance change, Ootori Kyoya stood in her living room and looked… nervous? Yes it was most definitely nervous that made him adjust his glasses and ruffle his hair. "Well?" she asked staring inquisitively at him.

"Fujoka Haruhi, would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?" he asked coming down to one knee in front of her and pulling a small box out of his jacket pocket.

"Kyoya," she gasped and froze in shock for a moment and smiled, "yes."

He slid the ring on her finger; one simple diamond on a thin silver band. Perfect for the girl wearing it. Standing up he pulled her into his arms and kissed her. Proud of himself for doing the most nerve wracking thing in his entire life.

"That's how daddy proposed?" a small child with deep grey eyes and long brown hair asked.

"Yes, and any other way wouldn't have been half as perfect. " Haruhi smiled down at her six year old daughter.
