He should have known. He really should have. He'd been at sea long enough. When he saw a man wearing a straw hat surrounded by friends, he should have know. But he didn't. One of his crew even tried to tell him. But he didn't listen. Why didn't he listen? Didn't he always say that he valued what his crew had to say? He had no excuse. He should have known.
It had been a small joke to impress the barmaid, to show her how daring he could be. But he honestly had no idea who the man was. Just a joke. Knock the hat off his smiling head, step on it and walk away the more intimidating man with the beautiful barmaid on his arm. This was his town after all, that man looked too happy. Defiantly not a man of the sea, a man to be feared. Just a random man, with a loud laugh, stupid grin and strange hat. Nothing more. Then why didn't it go like that, according to plan? He really should have known.
He had winked at the bar maid and whispered, "Watch this", before setting down his drink and walking towards the smiling man. It was time to show that straw hatted man who ran this town.
He should have known something was wrong when the barmaid gasped and his crew and the bar grew silent. Except for that man and his friends.
There was exactly nine of them. All weirdos, some with green or blue hair. One held a cigarette in one hand as he tried to slide an arm round an orange haired womans shoulders, who swatted it away without breaking conversation. Another woman sat talking to some sort of raccoon of all things. One man had a strange skeleton costume on. They just carried on. Laughing and talking away. Ignoring him. How could they? Did they not know who he was? About his massive 100 million belli bounty he had and his achievements?
The either did not know, or did not care. He could not have that. So the grabbed the hat from the mans head, laughing as he did so. By this time, one of his own crew stepped up to try and stop him. They had known who this man was, why hadn't he, the captain? But, he did not know. Yet. He would.
In a second, the mans crew fell silent, watching him and then turning back to their now silent friend, a look of shock and surprise on his face. He laughed. This was better, respect. They knew he was bad news, now knew he was dangerous. Good, that was better.
He threw the straw hat on the floor, and laughing stamped a boot on it, crushing it inwards. He then looked up at the man, expecting fear, sadness and surprise. What he got was a face so intimidating, it made you fear for your life, but he couldn't look away from those hard cold eyes. Eyes that were now not laughing. He heard the man murmur, "Don't touch my hat". As soon as these words met his ears, he was scared. More so than he had ever been. Those words held so much power and hate, it was unbelievable.
He didn't have anytime to run before a hard powerful fist sent him flying through a wall, out to sea. He really should have known, who that man was. He had seen his bounty, knew of his power, so why didn't he know? He really should have known, never to mess with the great pirate, Monkey D. Luffy.
It was a shame, that he didn't know. He should have known.
