Four year old Sarah Murphy couldn't understand why it would be so good to have a little sibling.

Mommy and Daddy had encouraged her that having a sibling would be fun- but he hadn't been much fun since he arrived. He couldn't play with her- he just cried, made icky smells and demanded her parents' attention.

What made it even worse was that because her sibling was a brother, it meant he was unlucky. Sara knew her daddy was very unlucky- due to a family curse only Murphy males inherited.

She decided to find out what was the big deal with her little brother one day, so she sneaked into her brother's nursery, with her best friend a stuffed robot plush named Doddie- after her grandfather- early in the morning- before even her parents were up.

It was filled with weird things- apparently to overcome the curse- and baby things. His crib lay beneath the window, next to which was a table containing a weird white box with holes in it.

Sarah climbed up onto the table- which also curse proofed- and peeked in over the railing.

To her surprise, a tiny person lay asleep in the crib, tufts of brown hair shimmering in the dawn's rays. He was dressed in a blue platypus onesie, and as he occasionally twitched in his sleep, he made weird noises. But they were soft, and not at all annoying.

Sarah stared down at her brother, feeling a little different from when she came in. Now he looked...sweet. She'd have much preferred a kitten or a puppy- but seeing her baby brother like this was nice. She liked it.

"Sweet dreams, Milo," Said Sarah, softly, remembering her parents' words to her before bed every night, before leaving the room again with Doddie.

...

Meanwhile, Bridgette couldn't sleep, and she was reading a book, when she heard her daughter's voice over the baby monitor.

She smiled, and put her book down. It looked like Sarah was finally starting to accept her little brother.

This was confirmed when Sarah asked her at breakfast: "Mommy, why is bad luck so cute?"
