Chapter 7

The sun casted a weary shadow over the ranch, the orange glow made the air seem slightly tense. As the evening wore on the bunk house grew darker and in the distance the clangs of horse shoes could be heard. Only George was in the bunk house. He sat on his bunk and was looking at Lennie's bunk his things were just as he had left them and for a small moment the sounds outside almost disappeared as George let out a pitiful cry. George sat up and went over to the table and dealt himself a solitaire hand and he slowly placed the cards down. Then in a sudden moment Candy came in to the room he grumbled over to his bunk and laid on it and fell into a blissful sleep.

An hour or so passed before the door opened again this time it was Carlson he went over to his bunk and grabbed something and went out again. A couple of seconds later Curley came in, his arm was still bandaged and in a sling from when Lennie had busted it, he and went to George "you goin' Suzie's place"

"No"

"Why not"

"Feel like hanging round here instead of goin' to a whore house"

"Fine suit your self I'm goin' to get some kicks"

Curley left the room and the sounds of laughing and joking could be heard and gradually the sounds faded into the distance.

Then out of nowhere Candy woke up and he was grabbing his throat and was screaming he started going blue and then as quickly as it happened the room grew quiet. Candy laid motionless his hand still close to his throat and his stump next to it. George went over to Carlson's bunk and rummaged through his things and found his lugar he put it under his coat and went out. A few minutes later he was tip-toeing around the brush and he sat down and rested his head against the old ash pile and fell asleep he woke in the morning and realised what his body was next to, he squirmed the site of Lennie half rotting corpse. Lennie's face had already been disfigured by the vultures and maggots had already eaten the lower half of his body but George knew it was Lennie.

The sun rose and made the brush glow with a deep pink and the water snake glided up the pool toward the heron who was sticking his head in the water looking for water snakes. The wind rustled through the trees and blew a few loose leaves off. And the Salinas River trickled silently into the valley. George stood up and looked at the lugar on the ground its metal features glistened in the morning sun light. George knelt down by the waters edge and took a drink He knew that what must be done must be done.

But before he had time to pick up the firearm a when a horse came down into the valley. The rider lifted his head and spoke to George

"Why d'ya steel me lugar"

"What d'ya mean I didn't steel it"

"Init obvious it's on the floor"

"But I was borrowing it"

"Without asking"

But before George had time to respond Curley came from behind and smacked him over the head. Carlson dismounted the horse and joined in the fight. When the fight stopped Carlson took his lugar to George's head and pulled the trigger.

"Come on lets have some whisky Curley"

"My pa was goin' to can him and his Lennie friend"

George's body lay next to Lennie's and a lonely vulture came and began a very long feast.
