This is my take on Sam's comment at the beginning of "Coming to you Live"
"Late night?"
"Yeah, you could say that."
"Blonde, brunette or redhead?"
"One of each."
"Didn't know you had the stamina."
"Can you believe Malone kept her secret?"
"Why not?"
"He had a gun to his head. He could have been killed."
"He was protecting his friend. I'd do the same."
Sam left the base after their shift and headed for his apartment. After grabbing a beer, he flopped on the couch reviewing everything that had happened during his shift. He had told Jules, after they returned to the base from arresting Cosgrove, that he would protect his friends. Yet, he had hurt her for no reason while they were exercising.
The phone rang and he ignored it. He had no energy to talk to anyone now. The answering machine clicked on and he settled to listen to the message.
"Sam. It's Jen. Listen, I saw you on the news today and wanted to make sure you are okay. My girls had a great time last night and keep asking when their Uncle Sam will come back. Call me back soon, I want to make sure you're okay."
The answering machine clicked off. Sam sat, thoughts in a different place.
Flashback
The first day Sam had a day off at SRU, he went to see Jen. He told her the whole story, how it had been him who killed her brother. To his surprise, Jen was forgiving. "Sam, Ben could have been killed at any time. He knew the risks going in." She stood up to go get her crying daughter out of her playpen. She returned with a redhead one and a half year old. "Sam, I have something to show you. Can you hold Isabella for a minute?" Sam took the girl and Jen disappeared. She returned with a letter and exchanged it for her daughter. "Ben wrote this and I think you should read this."
Sam opened the handwritten letter:
Jen,
I have decided to follow in Dad's footsteps and I am going to join the army. Sam and I are going to become long range shooters in the same unit.
Jen, if something happens to me and Sam makes it out alive, whether I die in friendly fire or by the enemy, tell Sam I want him to remain in touch with you. Let him become an uncle to your girls and my memory will live on.
Hopefully this will never happen but in case I don't come back, remember that I love you and your family.
Love,
Ben
Sam was in tears by the end of the letter. He turned to Jen. "Of course I will play uncle to your children."
Jen smiled. "You just met Isabella, don't leave until Vanessa wakes up from her nap."
"Jen, if I am going to play uncle you have to help me. How old are your girls and when are their birthdays?"
Jen smiled. "I'll make you a family calendar. Isabella is almost two and Vanessa just turned three and a half. Thank you Sam, for honoring Ben's wish."
End Flashback
Last night he had babysat so Jen and her husband Alex could go out for their anniversary. He had been joking with Jen how could she, a blonde, have a redhead and brunette? Jen just laughed and asked Sam which color hair he thought she would have next, as she rubbed her stomach.
The two girls had exhausted him. They knew that their mommy was going to have a baby soon and wanted to stay up until Jen and Alex got home. Sam had not been able to get both of the girls to sleep until after eleven. When Jen and Alex returned at a quarter to twelve, Sam was thrilled to be able to leave and crash in bed.
His exhaustion from dealing with the girls last night had lead him to snap at Jules when he really wanted to try to work things out with her.
He lifted himself off the couch. He had to return Jen's call before she started calling every five minutes. Maybe after I call Jen I will call Jules…
