A/N-My first one-shot! Can you believe it? Yeah, either can I. I was in my room listening to the radio and this idea just came to me. I hope you guys like it! I stopped writing Till You Want Me (which I still feel bad about, I wrote about why I quit it in my user profile thingy-majig), and I've just been studying for finals and thinking of ideas for a new story that I want to write this summer. Anyway, enjoy and review!
Heartache
He loved to watch her work. The way she was so enthusiastic about her job amazed him. Sure, he liked his job, but the real reward was when he came home from a long day of grumpy lawyers and hassled clients.
"Is there something on my face?" she asked, interrupting his thoughts.
He shook his head, and brightened when she smiled at him. He had been caught staring at her again, probably the fifth time that afternoon. As she went back to her drawing, he let his eyes wander. She was so beautiful. The way her eyes would sparkle when she saw him was the best feeling in the world. Knowing only he could do that made him feel important, and not as useless as he usually felt. She stopped drawing, and looked at her watch.
"Sweetie, you should head back to work. Your lunch break is almost over."
He tried to come up with an excuse to stay, but gave up rather quickly and muttered an "Alright". She watched him walk to a garbage can and throw out the remaining contents of his lunch. As he buttoned up his jacket, his eyes found her yet again. He knew he was in love with her. Ever since the night she had announced her engagement to Leo, he knew. No surprise there; jealousy had always been one of his worst traits.
He wrapped his arms around her and said, "Thanks for having me over for lunch. Let's do it again sometime." She took a step back, and peered into his eyes. She saw something there that wasn't there before. Anger? No. It was loneliness. There was loneliness in the eyes she had so many times got lost in.
"Yes, let's do this again soon," she whispered.
He kissed her lightly. As he pulled back, he instinctively gave her another peck. He now tasted her favorite strawberry lip gloss on his own lips. He knew he shouldn't have kissed her again, but he did. Just in case. Just in case he wouldn't see her for another week. Just in case he missed the few messages on his answering machine left by her. Just in case Leo would come home late from work. Just in case Karen gave her a hard time about her outfit. Just in case he wasn't there to comfort her.
He broke away from her, and retreated to the door. As he looked back at her, he kicked himself for not kissing her a third time.
