What Does Ice Become When It Melts?
"Ahhh, it's so hot!" Tohru exclaimed, squinting up into the sun.
Sprawled on the grass at her left, Kyo muttered, "Do you have to sound so happy when you say that?"
"Do you have to sound so miserable when you say that?" murmured Yuki from Tohru's right.
"Sh...shut up! It's too hot for me to have to beat your ass up!"
Yuki pulled a rapidly-melting ice cube out of his lemonade, and placed it on his forehead. "I'm happy you have that excuse today," he said passively. Kyo scowled. "It is too hot," Yuki added, and Kyo's frown stayed, but his shoulders relaxed.
Tohru beamed, and put her hands on her knees as she sat between the two boys. "I am happy!" she said sunnily. "Kyo-kun and Yuki-kun are getting along," she appeared not to hear a quick snort from a slightly red-faced Kyo, "we're on summer vacation, and tomorrow evening we get to go to the festival! Don't you like summer, Kyo-kun?"
"It's all the same," he grunted.
"Eh..." Tohru kept her smile as well as she could, and Yuki watched her get flustered for a moment before stepping in with a comment.
"He just means he doesn't like any one season best, Honda-san. Remember what he said about spring? It's the same." Yuki's ice cube left a wet trail as he moved down his face towards his neck.
Kyo turned his head in Yuki's direction and bared his teeth. "Since when do you talk for me?"
"Well, if you can't express yourself properly, someone has to pick up the slack."
Tohru fidgeted, looking back and forth between them, as first Kyo and then Yuki each rose to one elbow.
"I already told you it's too hot, girly-boy! So stop -" He stopped abruptly when a fresh ice cube landed on his stomach, already seeping a wet spot into his shirt.
Yuki met his glare with an unreadable smile. "Better?"
Between them, Tohru waved her hands and made ineffectual "eep!" noises, to no apparant avail.
Kyo picked up the ice and examined it, then looked back at Yuki. "You think this little crappy piece of ice is gonna cool me off? You're an idiot." He lay back down, and put the ice cube onto his forehead, as Yuki had done earlier.
Yuki lay back down too, and closed his eyes. "Stupid cat."
Tohru sighed, and relaxed. I AM happy, she thought, and squinted up at the clouds, her smile beating the brightness of the sun.
