She Will Be Loved – Ashes to Ashes FanFic
Inspired by a scene in The Last Song, Alex hears a song from the future and can't help but sing along.
I do not own Ashes to Ashes or any of the characters. I may also not have stayed true to the character's personalities for this story but I thought the scene suited Gene and Alex so I wrote it. She Will Be Loved is by Maroon 5 and the scene is taken from the film The Last Song.
Gene was driving at his usual ridiculous speed along a long London road, Alex as usual clinging onto her seat for dear life. Afraid for what might happen to her but also afraid to reach for the seatbelt. Gene sped round a corner and flicked the switch on the radio. Alex was surprised, Gene never really listened the radio in the Quattro.
"Do you have to drive quite so fast?" Alex asked for what felt like the 100th time that day.
"We need to get to the other side of London in fifteen minutes how d'you expect me to drive?" Gene retorted.
"Inside the speed limits maybe, I would like to get to the other side of London alive thank you," Alex said, a tone of sarcasm in her voice.
"Bolly I'm a police officer I'll drive how I bloody well want to," Gene said angrily.
"Please Gene, just this once, for me, slow down?" Alex asked.
Gene reluctantly let his foot off the accelerator and the car slowed down to a reasonable speed. Alex was slightly shocked that Gene had listened to her but decided not to make a comment.
"There Lady Bols, you happy now?" he asked her sarcastically.
"Yes thank you," she smiled back, kicking off her heels and lifting her legs up onto the seat.
"Good," he said, she swore she saw the hint of a smile flash back at her.
The song changed on the radio and it took Alex a while to realise what it was.
"Turn it up," she told Gene.
"You do it, I'm concentrating on making sure I don't go over the speed limit," Gene retorted.
Alex increased the volume of the song on the radio and knew she was right.
"That's impossible, it hasn't been released yet," Alex said, disbelieving.
"What are you moaning about now?" Gene asked her.
"This song, it isn't released until 2004, I remember," Alex explained.
"Who's it by?" he asked her.
"She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5," she told him.
"Maroon who?" he asked back.
"Doesn't matter but I love it," she smiled, turning the volume up higher and joining in with the chorus.
Gene was completely mesmerised. Alex's voice was soft and light yet it hit the notes perfectly, she could sing really well.
"Wow," he said once she stopped and let the song continue without her.
"What?" she asked.
"You can really sing," he smiled back.
She shrugged, unsure of what to say. Gene Hunt had just complimented her, been actually kind to her and he seemed to be relaxing, what was it with him today? He wasn't right but she wasn't complaining.
Gene joined in with her jokingly on the next chorus and she couldn't help laughing.
"What?" he asked with a smile, "we got it, come on."
He began to shout noisily the words he'd picked up, Alex laughing with her head in her hands.
"No," she said as looked up again and he let her take over the singing, rather liking this song after all.
