"And if I am damned regardless," Carlisle said as he cleaned the wound on Bella's arm. She looked up at him suddenly, shocked by what he had just said.

"Carlisle. You could never be damned. It's impossible," she told him sternly. "You've done too much good in this world to be sent to hell like that." She saw the sadness in his pale but beautiful face. The face of someone who seemed to believe he was condemned to hell. Immortal or not, his soul was worth so much more than that. How could he possibly be damned when helping people made him so incredibly happy.

"Thank you for being so kind, Bella," he said sincerely, but she could tell he still believed his fate. He finished cleaning the cut and burned the alcohol and gauze. Bella shook her head in dismay. She took Carlisle frozen hands in hers and looked him in the face, in his golden eyes, and silently berated him for what she saw as stupidity.

He met her eyes with a sadness. This girl believed in him. He knew that he was a sort of second father figure to her now. She loved Charlie dearly for his fairness and protectiveness and his love for her. There was really only one area where Carlisle was better than Charlie for her: talking. She rarely did need it, but Carlisle knew Charlie, and so knew he found feelings awkward. "Carlisle Cullen," she finally addressed him with a tone of firmness and finality. "You are kind and brave and a genuinely amazing...being. There is no way you could ever land up in hell."

He was still reluctant to believe her. In his eyes, she knew, his immortality was more important in his fate than any good he did, no matter how powerful his actions were. Bella shook her head again, becoming a bit more frustrated with him. Why, why could he not believe her? In himself? "You can't go to hell. You could have took the easy way of being a vampire, running all over the place killing innocent humans. Instead you found another way to survive, a way that means you've gone against your nature and never tasted human blood!" Her hands were gripping his shoulders by now as she tried desperately to get through to him. "Esme, Edward, Jasper, Alice, Emmett, Rosalie...you've trained them all to survive the way you always have. Another six less vampires killing people! You did that! Do you know how many lives you've saved?"

She stared intensely at him, watching as he slowly came around to her way of thinking. "My life! You've saved mine. If you hadn't put that strength into Edward, he would have slaughtered me the first day we met!"

Maybe she was right. He had eternal life in him, which was seen as a sin, but the lives that he chose to spare, the lives his wife and children have trained themselves to spare, could they make up for that? Could it really be that his defiance of his very nature was his saviour from damnation?

He was so deep in thought that he was slightly surprised when Bella grabbed him and pulled him into her arms. She felt the gash on her arm screaming at her to stop, but she needed him to understand that he meant so much to her. Charlie was her dad, and she loves him so much. Carlisle was a kind of father-slash-friend. Charlie struggled to talk about things like emotions and human nature, but Carlisle's three and a half centuries' experience put him more at ease with it all. "You'll never be damned, Carlisle. Trust me," she whispered in his ear.

"I do," he replied just as silently. "I'm not going to hell. I trust you."

Hope it was alright!
