Empty

"You come home tomorrow?" he triple checked, his voice almost begging the saucy brunette to hurry home.
His kitchen, he had very recently decided looked extremely bare without her. The former marine's memory had a nasty habit of flashing back to other times his kitchen had suddenly become empty. Even though he knew that this was different, that she was on a trip for work, that she'd be home tomorrow, he had to admit it made him feel empty inside.
He missed the popping of water as she boiled pasta, the symphony of bells as timers rang announcing the arrival of the dishes she had made, the slick slicing sound the knife made as she chopped up vegetables, the smell of fresh bread mixed with the lemon tea she insisted on making, her laugh as he tickled her sides, her smile as he kissed her hair , the soft sighs she let escape when he extracted knots from her neck, but most of all he missed the companionship that was always complete with her soft smiles and gentle welcome home.
"Yeah, bright and early" she promised.
"Good" a bare voice said, "kitchen looks bare without you"
She caught his grudging admittance, what he didn't say. That he needed her wanted her back in his arms that he was afraid he was letting himself feel too much. She caught the premise for this fear as well. The brunette liked to think she was smart, she didn't miss what the empty house was doing to him, especially since he had so recently filled it.
"I left you lasagna in the fridge and fresh baked bread outside the bread baker." She tempted and when he didn't answer she bribed, "garlic is in the top shelf of the spice rack."
"It's not the same as when you're here to make it" he grumbled.
The brunette's heart broke at the gruff, tired sound of his voice. He sounded miserable.
"I know Jet" Kate agreed, "I'll be home tomorrow."
Gibbs heard mumbling in the background and the gentle rumbling sound as her hand covered the receiver and she answered someone.
"I have to go," she apologized.
"I'll see you tomorrow." Gibbs regenerated.
'I love you's were promised as they hung up their phones and the gruff former marine prayed she would hurry home.
A/N: WELL…
If you see Gibbs, Kate, and Belle wandering around please send them my way. They are needed in "Can it Be Bliss?" and I'd like to resume work on that right away.
