It was a warm day in the middle of June. I stood in front of Damon and his car waiting for him to leave. We had both decided it was time to finally go looking for Stefan. I knew I had to find him because it wouldn't be right for his girlfriend to abandon him now. Damon however thought it was his civil right to protect his little brother.
Damon came over to me and wrapped his arms around me giving me a quick hug. After he let go of me he stood back and looked me in the eye. "While I'm gone I want you to look after this." He said as he placed something cool into my hand.
I opened my hand and saw a glass heart. My voice caught in my throat as I tried to explain why I couldn't take it. "Damon, I … I can't ..." I trailed off as I tried to give it back
Damon closed my hand and lifted my chin up so I was looking in his eyes. "No matter what, it will always belong to you." His voice held so much emotion that I knew he was talking about more than the glass trinket.
I bowed my head so he couldn't read how much pain and sorrow were in my eyes. Damon quickly let go of my face and walked into the car. I could feel his eyes on me but I wouldn't lift my head. I heard the door slam shut and the engine start.
As I heard the tires spin on the gravel I looked up and out of nowhere I felt my feet moving underneath me and heard my voice yelling his name out. Just before the car hit the road Damon stopped the car and stepped out.
I ran to him crying and flung my arms around him, "Damon I'm sorry, I didn't mean to …" before I could finish Damon cut me off.
"What are you talking about?" he asked with pain in his voice, he hated when people cried.
Before I could think about what I was going to say I blurted out, "I love you, Damon, I need you." I pleaded.
Damon stood there for a moment looking awestruck. I could see his love for me flash in his eyes but then he was filled with purpose. "Elena I…"
I cut him off before he could say anything else. I didn't want him to say he didn't want me. "Please do go." I cried.
"I have to" was all Damon got out. I could hear the pain in his voice and when I looked into his eyes all I saw was his love and admiration for me.
"Damon" I said still not ready to give him up.
He took my hand and said. "Elena look at me." I felt his hand gently tilt my head up so our eyes met. 'I have to go; I have to save my brother. I owe him that." He said the last part in a defeated voice, I could remember all the times he saved Damon here in Mystic Falls and that wasn't even half I presumed.
"Come back" I pleaded with my eyes.
Damon's face took on a look of sadness. "I will." He promised.
Before either of us had second thoughts Damon pulled me closer to him and gingerly put his lips to mine. At first I thought about pulling back then I realized this is what I wanted.
"Elena?" I head an all too familiar voice call. I stepped back from Damon and saw Stefan face looking at both of us puzzlingly.
"Stefan?" Both Damon and I said in unison. The two of us looked at each other in pure shock we had been looking for Stefan for almost a year and he was looking as good as ever.
I was so happy. I looked into Damon's face and kissed him passionately on the lips. The two of us didn't pull away from each other even when we heard Stefan grumble in the back ground. We had finally found what we were looking for and could now unleash all that we were holding back from each other.. Starting with a trip to Damon's room.
