Bellatrix Black has a fairly intact mind.
She believes in blood purity - she also believes in laughing with her sisters, in whispering soft words into either of the Lestrange brother's ears (she really does not care which one), in her dark Slytherin pride.
She is not conventionally pretty but she is powerful - not the power that comes from thousands of galleons, but the kind that commands attention when it is in the middle of a room, the kind that does everything wrong but hears everything right.
She is true to her heritage, true to her parents. Andromeda leaves, Narcissa is quiet, but Bellatrix?
Bellatrix stays, Bellatrix smiles, Bellatrix is a Black.
/
Bellatrix Lestrange has an unsteady mind.
Her Lord, Lord Voldemort, has commanded the deaths of dozens at her hand, and she has destroyed them with no moral restraints.
Whenever she hears Andromeda in the back of her mind, shouting equality, she yells Avada Kedavra one more time and destroys the voice. Whenever she hears Narcissa in the back of her mind, shouting mercy, she yells Avada Kedavra one more time and destroys the voice.
She looks at the faces lined up in front of her, looks at the tears, the blood, and smirks. Imperio, Cruciatus, Avada Kedavra.
She is true to her purity, true to her Lord. Andromeda abandons, Narcissa is meek, but Bellatrix?
Bellatrix destroys, Bellatrix demeans, Bellatrix is a Death Eater.
/
Bellatrix has no mind.
She has been sucked out of her very being. Long gone is the girl and woman she once was - now there is an empty shell of a person who knows how to do nothing but listen and obey and follow orders.
When she escapes Azkaban, she is faced with a new world. A place with more filthy blood-traitors and muggles and mudbloods. More people to destroy.
At this point, it is not win or lose. It is kill or kill, and so she kills. She wreaks havoc with a smile on her face.
Maybe the others shy away from her. Maybe they are afraid. She is glad. She only needs the appreciation of her Lord, and he gives it.
She is true to her insanity, true to her reality. Andromeda hides, Narcissa cries, but Bellatrix?
Bellatrix maligns, Bellatrix murders, Bellatrix is mad.
