Author's Note: I don't even watch Smallville anymore but I still love Clark and Lois...and Erica Durance is my favorite Lois Lane. That's why I put this here. So...read & enjoy!

For so long, he had thought his heart belonged to Lana.

For so long, he had been wrong.

Years later, he looked back on it all and could only shake his head in wonder.

Wonder how he could be so blind as not to see the love that was before him.

Wonder how he had not recognized the jolt in his heart when she was around.

But he had not been willing to let go of the past - to let go of Lana.

Even after it was clear that they shouldn't be together, clear that their feelings were gone.

Lana had sought redemption from her sins in his arms and he just wanted, like always, a "normal" life. But his life could never be normal.

Which was why she made so much sense for him. She was far from your average girl.

"What are you thinking?" she asks him, perching casually on his desk, head tilted, long brown hair pouring over her shoulder.

"Hm?" As always, he pretends he has been absorbed in his work.

Her eyes roll. "Smallville, don't even try it. I know you were thinking about something." She leans over, face hovering before his. "One of these days I'm going to find out all your secrets."

Appearing unnerved with her so close before his face is not an easy task. "I'm sure you will Lois," he responds in typical Clark Kent fashion.

She smirks, the straightens herself. "I will because I'm me."

A loud slightly outraged voice calls Lois' name.

"What did you do this time Lois?" Clark asks, eyes darting to the Chief's office.

"Nothing. Well, nothing that bad." Lois shrugs, then heads to the Chief's office, walking backwards. "Wish me luck."

A small smile adorns Clark's face as his eyes linger on the door that Lois just shut.

"Hey C.K." Jimmy is next to Clark's desk, that goofy grin on his face. "Get back to work." With a wink, the baby faced photographer is gone.

Clark admonishes himself for not being guarded, then concentrates hard on his work.

For a second. Then he's thinking about her - Lois Lane - the love of his life - his soulmate - his destiny.

From far away, the sounds of sirens meet his ears.

At least, she is part of his destiny.

The other part of his destiny - well, it involves blue tights and a red cape.
