Breath of Fire
Prologue

Disclaimer: I do not own Breath of Fire; it is the property of Capcom. I am not trying to make a profit off of this novelization of Breath of Fire, nor am I claiming to have been a part in its making. I am merely hoping to honor its brilliancy and those who assisted in its creation by writing this story.

Author's Note: Hopefully you enjoy reading my novelization of the first Breath of Fire, and thanks for doing so.If you care to, leave a review; I would like to know what you think of my writing. Also, if some things are inaccurate, pleaseexcuse them for the time being. It had been a while since I last played the game, so I wrote this from memory; I'll try to make it more interesting to read by adding some of my own creations as well.

Zog was the leader of the Dark Dragon Empire; this was a well-known fact in all parts of the world. His nation was the single "super-power," and because of this and the immensity of his army (even though many of its soldiers were plain humans, having no abilities worth his attention), he had an extremely powerful influence over many of the world's nations. Do you not agree? Here, I'll decimate one of your villages for you, because I'm a tyrant and I have the power to. Now do you dare to disagree?

Of course, Zog would be littlemore than a tyrant if not for his top general, Jade. Jade had skillfully and quickly ascended the ranks after joining the Dark Dragon army, and he had done it more impressively then Zog's previous general had; he could also advise when asked for advice. Zog had felt obligated to reward such humongous potential; if that could be called Jade's true potential, that is. The emperor had later found that his general's power nearly rivaled his own. Jade was dangerous, and he could become a threat if he had too much free time to think of that aspect (and what if he found out about the Dragon Song?). So Zog had sent Jade on a mission, something he himself had long wanted to get underway: to find and gather the most elite and most loyal subjects that could be found. Together, these subjects and Jade would form a "Council" to oversee the Dark Dragon Empire and to uphold his laws. His laws. And Jade had performed admirably, finding four perfect matches; sure, they were either outlaws or outcasts, but they were diligent and powerful, just as Zog had wanted.

But even Jade and the Council and being the leader of Scande, the most powerful nation in the world, could not satisfy Zog's taste and delight of power. He was a mighty dragon and yet his thirst still seemed to be unending; the emperor was addicted to power you could hear some brave citizens of his kingdom say. He sent the Council members out a mere month after gathering them, each of them to different regions to find even more ways of increasing his strength. Zog could feel something was waiting to be found, something big...

No, something enormous...

Though not even Zog had expected the discovery of one of the six Goddess Keys, one of the thresholds to one of the greatest powers ever imagined. And with the stories and legends and the facts renewed in his mind, Zog began to put his army to work. He made a promise to himself; a vow to the world that one day he would own all of it. And with that, the Dark Dragon Empire began global conquest, driven forth by the solid determination and willpower of its king, who could be heard on some nights whispering to the force that was driving him onward to find the other five keys.

The Goddess Tyr...
