I'm issuing a Fanfiction Challenge! I'm new to the fan realm for Rise of the Guardians and am absolutely in love with Jack Frost stories. The following is an idea I've been toying with and while I intend to continue with this story, I'd like to offer up the first chapter as a challenge to my fellow writers for Halloween.

Rules: it can be any length, genre, and rating. OCs are welcomed. No marry sue/Gary Stu, self-inserts, or crossovers. Be as creative and clever as you like. Let me know if you take up the challenge, I'd love to read your story!

The cover image was not created for this story and is used without permission of the artist. I suspect it's a ficart to a story I've read, so if you know the story or the artist please inform me so I can give proper credit.

Rise of the Guardians
Mouse Trap
Author: Zorra Reed

Bones crushed against one another with nerve wrecking force. Metal teeth gnawed at cartilage and sinew. The very Air rumbled with displeasure, her sound cracking the atmosphere like a nightmarish echo. It was one of many sickening sounds that reached the young spirit's ears and twisted his gut with dread. Trembling lips parted without sound and he cried out for silence. For a moment stolen out of time…all went still. But again the sounds rose, louder than before. Their horrid squelch, more terrible then a rabbit's dying cry, left teeth chattering and ears ringing. The nauseating stench of blood danced on his taste buds as it rose from the pool of mingled mud beneath him; what had begun as a simple drip now an oozing geyser of crimson gushing from his wounds. His senses where stimulated beyond his tolerance as he lay naked beneath the onslaught, overwhelmed.

She was the wind. A self-appointed guardian who'd vowed to watch over and bear the neglected frost spirit, having been there at his first awakening with Manny. She'd carried the boy upon her shoulders as he danced upon the clouds. She'd soothed his hair back and tucked him into her arms when he cried in loneliness. Now, it broke her heart to see him hurting and beyond her ability to help. She'd bear him away if only she could take hold of him. If only she could blow his staff that last finger's length of distance into his reach.

She rippled the snow-colored, sweat-damp hair from the child's face in an attempt to stir the teenager from his dazed indulgence of forgetfulness, and tugged at the tattered remnants of his faded hoody. The boy's mind slipped further away with each tick of the clock as the endless seconds passed; his torment coming to a close as his life's blood drained from him. Desperation filled her. She could not bear to lose her adopted child. Not like this. She wrapped around him. For one fraction of a moment, she had him. His fingers grazed the neck of his shepherd's staff; the fuzz growing around his mind, having dulled his awareness, suddenly retreated at the touch of his magic. Above! The winds hissed warning came too late. The teen's strained heart gave a sudden flutter of renewed fear as he turned his haunted crystalline gaze skyward…

"Trick or Treat, Jack Frost!"
