Two days since the New Year Eve and the roads were completely filled with snow. The weather looked beautiful. I was standing near my office window and gulping down my nth cup of coffee. It was way past midnight. I sighed and settled down at my table picking up Carrie's file for a millionth time that day.

Carrie was an earthquake victim. She was brought to us by Yamanaka Ino, one of my very good friends and an active social worker. Carrie fainted a lot at the relief camp. Initially, the medics dismissed it, as a sign of shock. After-all she did loose her parents during the natural disaster.

But then things got serious, and she was admitted in our hospital, the country's best one. After many tests, we concluded that she had both- an artery blockage and a brain tumor- but money to afford none.

I recollected how scared she looked that day. Her aqua eyes were tearing up already. I decided to the surgery for free.

Next challenge was, however, to find an equally kindhearted neurosurgeon.

I put down Carrie's file. A large telephone directory was open in-front of me, my eyes glued to it while I noted down the phone numbers of all the neurosurgeons I could find. I have been doing this since the past 3 days. I fought a yawn chugging down the last few drops of caffeine. A soft knock on the door broke through my scribbling.

"Come in", I called. It was Uchiha Sasuke. The most brilliant guy I have ever met in my entire lifetime. Uchiha was one of the world's best neurosurgeons. But his services were only limited to the cream class. Ino had already asked him to perform the surgery free of cost, but got a big fat "no" as her answer.

"Hn. Why are you still here?" He asked sitting on a chair in-front of me. We were good colleagues.

"Have a surgery later at night" I replied stretching by back and twirling my long pink locks. 3 sleepless nights in a row were taking their toll on me.

"The earthquake victim?" The Uchiha looked tired. His black hair were a mess and his eyes had dark circles underneath.

"Carrie" I replied placing her file on his outstretched arm.

"You seriously are planning to do a Bypass surgery free of cost?" He asked flipping through the file pages.

I chuckled at his disbelieving tone. "Yup."

"What difference does it make?" he questioned, this time examining her MRI report."She is gonna die anyway. The tumor is serious."

"I..", He was correct. Bypass surgery or no Bypass surgery she would seriously die, if the tumor isn't treated fast. I closed my eyes and saw a picture of Carrie's deceased family. She had brought it to the hospital along with her.

"Am I gonna die?"

"Ofcourse not, I will save you," I said brushing her brown hair.

"Pinky promise?"

"Yup..Pinky Promise."

"She is just 12..her whole life is..Nevermind," I shook my head,"I will do my level best to save her." I said firmly.

Sasuke's eyes clashed with mine. "No neurosurgeon is gonna do it for free."

I sighed. My heart contracted painfully and my chest felt heavy. My mentor Tsunade always advised me to "not to feel any kind of attachment to your patients". I never, never listened to her.

Sasuke stood up. "Why are you so affected?"

"I..I have no idea." I admitted honestly.

"Get some sleep." I heard his husky voice. He was standing next to the door, holding it open. He yawned.

"Tell Maggie to prep the OT. Be there in half-an-hour. Its about time the earthquake vic-Carrie-"He corrected himself, smirking,"smiled."

He shut the door and walked out. "Never took you for a softy"I mumbled inaudibly smiling at my colleagues actions.
