Hey guys! This is my first posted MR story. It's just a oneshot, with Max II/Maya and Omega as the stars. I found them intriguing together as a pairing.
Lyrics at the end come from the Evanescence song of the same name.
Failure.
What a goddamn fucking failure.
Those words rang out in both their heads, echoing over and over until it made them both want to scream until they could just keel over and die.
It was what everyone else wanted, anyway.

The clone, the copy, the inferior model, the girl. She was referred to by all except the last. They didn't understand that she, too, was human, that she, too, could feel. She wished she wasn't, sometimes, because feeling fucking hurt. Being as human as she was hurt. And as the one they called Maximum Ride beat her to the ground, all of them watching her destiny of failure unfold, she thought that no, she didn't want to be human if humans were like this.
They dragged her away. Oblivion like death followed.
Then there came that fateful day. The boy they had doted on, counted on, venerated as their saviour had failed them.
Just like her.

She raised her head to see him-the superboy, the gorgeous, perfect, genius boy that let everyone down.
"Who are you?"
"The Last."
Omega.
No longer did she want to be a failure.
"I'm... Maya."

He thought he was invincible. Well, obviously not. He was bested by an inferior specimen, by Maximum Ride.
He had been looking forward to the day he would face her-they all talked about it, and he had dreamed about it. Dreams of fists and combat boots and blood, her blood, spilling by his victorious hand. His eyes would shine with triumph while hers would be dead and lifeless.
Damn it all. They—fucking—lied.
When they locked him in that cell he wanted to be alone. They didn't even give him that, because there was a girl there. That girl who looked exactly like the one who defeated him, shamed him, devoid him of all purpose. He ought to hate her, he thought, but he didn't.
"Who are you?"
"The Last."
He was Omega and this, this experiment, this mutant, this girl, could never be an alpha. She was only Max II, after all. Max the Second, the Lesser, the Copy, the Clone that was so perfect and so, so flawed.
Failures, the both of them.
They had come to the end of the dream. It was time to wake up to reality. And reality was failure.
"I'm... Maya."

They bonded in the dark, those two pitiful creatures. The scientists were to terminate them, but had forgotten.
They were too insignificant to remember.
So when the flock had waged war on the School they escaped, together. And amidst the chaos and fire and blood, they found each other. She flew him over it all, over the death and destruction to a safe place.
Time went on, but the world ignored them. They didn't mind. They had had enough of humanity. Humanity left them behind.
They lay exposed to each other, naked and clothed by darkness. Still the world passed them by.
They were stains of the earth, red blots on its snow white surface. By the orange sunrise they beheld the catalyst of their destruction and their salvation, this bloody, filthy love. Still they cradled it in their hands, fed it like a dying fire, let it wash over them and dry up like the ocean. By nightfall it came back down in torrents, bathing them, filling their lungs with water they thirsted for.
This was the only thing they wouldn't fail.

Go on and bring your wings
Follow your heart 'til it bleeds
As we run towards the end of the dream
