Chapter 1: The Labyrinth

I never knew how much I really needed Sarah Williams until the day I read her into the Labyrinth.

I walked in the door of our dorm room to see Sarah lounging across the couch, doing homework. She turned to me. "Hay Bri." She was smiling. Apparently she was in a good mood. Wow. Weird.

I smiled at her as I sat my backpack and textbooks down on the table. "Hay. What's up?"

"Nothing. Doing homework." She said, running her fingers through her long mahogany hair. "It's kinda boring." We both laughed.

"Yeah. Wouldn't it be nice if homework didn't exist? Then we could finally have some freedom." I sat cross-legged on the floor and open my Calculus textbook. I sighed. "Wouldn't it be nice if we could go somewhere else?" I reached into my backpack and took out Labyrinth. "Wouldn't it be nice to go here?" Sarah laughed nervously. I turned to her and smiled. "What?"

"I wouldn't go there. I don't think I would go even if I got the chance." She turned away and muttered something under her breath. I had to strain to hear, but I could hear. "Not again."

Not again? Not again? What does she mean Not again? This was my chance to find out. "Sarah?" I said softly.

"Hmm?" She looked up from her work.

"What do you mean by 'Not again?' Have you... have you been to the labyrinth before?" I could barely get the world out. I looked up to her. Her expression was twisted up into a painful smile. I tried to smile with her. "Yeah stupid isn't it. What a thought. I guess my dreams are just getting the best of me. Sorry. That was really stupid."

Sarah looked down. "No. No it isn't."

I was completely shocked. I just asked her if she had ever been in the Labyrinth and she says it's not a stupid thought? What has gotten into her! "Wha... What? How can you say that?" She looked back at me, a tear rolled down her cheek. "Sarah what is it? Please. Tell me."

"Briar, if I tell you something, will you promise not to make fun of me?"

"Of course not!" I closed my textbook and sat next to her on the couch. "Go ahead."

Then, she started.
