DAYLILY

a beautiful bloom for a single day
born with the sunrise, explosion of glory
lovely in the light, orange and gold
dew sparkling on her petals

I walk by, and ponder how
she lies pertly among the other flowers
roses, carnations, irises blooming
yet they dull beside her glow

I want to pick her, put her to my nose
inhale the heavenly scent
I want to keep her, hold her to my heart
yet she's not for me, she's not for me

I must walk on, resist the allure
tear my gaze from her beauty and
leave her where she will flourish and live
leave her where she belongs

and as I walk on, world dead and grey
my eyes blinded by the light
I reflect on her life, her startling vigor
so unlike mine, dark and empty

and I know, by leaving her
she will be dead, gone at the sunset
her life merely a moment comparatively
yet so much more, so much more
