Open Your Eyes
Chapter One: When Dorks Rush In
Rick's POV
It was my first day back in Kings County and I was so excited to be back. I had to get out of Atlanta. Living there all by myself was getting freaking depressing. I missed my friends and I missed my sister, Maggie. She wasn't my real sister but her father took me in after my parents died when we were in middle school. She was a year younger than me and I always did my best to look out for her since Hershel had done the same for me.
The reason I was moving back to Kings County was that my best friend from high school, Glenn Rhee, had invested money in a company started by some fellow students in college who created their own brand of beer and wanted me to help with the accounting side of things. At the time no one thought it was a good idea, just a big waste of money but he was absolutely positive it would be a huge success and I completely believed in him too because... well, things always worked out for Glenn. So now, a couple years later I'm glad I encouraged and supported him because he was offering me a job to work at his company, and of course, I said yes right away because I would literally do anything to get out my current job. I absolutely hated it and my boss was a complete ass.
But yeah I'll admit that there are some other reasons besides a new job and missing my sister that I'm glad to be back home. Michonne was here. She had stayed in King's County to bless our lame hometown with her amazing art. I didn't obsess over her as much as I did in high school but the closer I got to King's County the more I could feel those old feelings rushing back.
I got a ride from uber to meet Maggie at our favorite hang out from when we were kids. My phone buzzed in my pocket and saw that Glenn said he would be down there too and could meet us, so I opened my texts with Maggie to let her know.
Me: Hey Maggie, I'm on my way. Just so you know I invited Glenn.
Maggie: What?! Rick why didn't you tell me! I'm gonna kill you!
Me: Wtf is your problem? Oh, wait! You don't still have that crush on him, do you? omg! xD
Maggie: I'll get you back. Just wait.
I sat in the back of the car laughing to myself while the driver gave me a strange look. I couldn't believe Maggie still had a crush on Glenn. Most of the girls in her grade did back in high school, but I was shocked to find out that she was still crazy about him. I wondered if the women in town all still fawned over Glenn like they did back then.
I finally arrived at the restaurant and quickly found my sister. She ran up to give me a hug. Before we could say hello to each other we both looked at the entrance to see Glenn walking in. I smiled and waved at him then turned my head to see Maggie become visibly nervous. "Hey Glenn, whats up," said Rick waving to him. He walked up to where we were standing to shake my hand "Nothing" said Glenn. Gosh….Glenn always had a way of making the most basic outfit look fancy. He had on a red and black flannel shirt with a tiny polka dots on his white tee underneath. His jeans were obviously designer and black timberlands complemented the whole look. And here I was with my plain wrinkled white tee, frumpy looking jeans and brown Birkenstocks. Next to Glenn, I looked like some old homeless man that just rolled out of his cardboard box. He turned to look at Maggie and smiled "Hey Maggie, I haven't seen you in awhile, you look beautiful" he said pushing back his black hair which made her focus on his arms with his sleeves rolled up, showing off his forearms, "umm thanks, it's good to see you." she said nervously.
After Maggie wiped the drool that started to fall from starting at Glenn she looked at me with a shit-eating grin and said "Oh! By the way, I invited Michonne too" Shit. Now I was the one turning bright red.
We found an empty table and all sat down. Of course being the gentleman, Glenn pulled out Maggie's seat for her. I looked around the restaurant and saw a woman...staring?...At me?!...Oh shit nevermind. She was looking past me. At Glenn. I looked over at him and he didn't even notice the girl or the other three that were staring at him. He was too busy listening intently to Maggie while she told him about the ups and downs of teaching middle school. Ugh...third wheel much? That's ok cause she'd be here soon. Her. Michonne. I wonder how she looks now. I haven't seen her since high school. I thought back to one of the last times we spoke, during my senior year.
"DAMN IT!" I could've sworn that I secured the rings on my binder! But as I tried to stuff it into my locker the gates of hell and paper flowed into the hallway around me. I dropped to my knees and started picking up the pieces of my last year in high school.
"When you graduate remind me to steal your math notes." My heart stopped. No joke my heart literally stopped for a second. That sound. Sweeter than any rendition of the Hallelujah chorus. As I looked up I saw the sweetest face that God had ever put on a human being. Brown eyes deep, wide and curious. Skin so radiant and so brown that God himself must have kissed her on the forehead after he made her, to grant her an eternal glow. Her hair was curly, wild and free from anything trying to tame it. Her nose was perfectly placed on her face. It was round and smooth and….Shit! I hope she doesn't smell me. I just came from gym class. She's not looking at me like I stink. Ugh. She's so beautiful.
"Sooooooo is that a no?" You're just staring Grimes; say something! "Umm sure sure. It's not a problem."
"Well good cause Maggie told me you were graduating with honors and I suck at math." she giggled. "Yea, I've always been pretty good at math." Way to toot your own horn you jackass. Fix it! "Um well..maybe….Ummm ya know...if you ever have any trouble...I mean with your math class and all. I could take a look...We! Could take a look and umm...I could help you out I mean….if you…." DING DING DING! "Oh, Rick I'm sorry I have to run I'll be late for drama class." She handed me my math notes and scurried around the corner and out of my life. Michonne. The most beautiful girl in the world. And by the way what the hell was that Rick? Maybe if it didn't take you a year and a half to form a sentence, you could have actually helped the girl out. Oh well, at least she acknowledged your presence on this earth. Be happy and thankful for the little things Grimes.
"Rick."
"Yes?"
"Rick."
"RICK!"
"Oh shit."
"Rick come back to earth dude. Were waiting for you to order." Glenn said. Ugh...everyone's staring at me. Glenn told the waiter to come back cause I needed another minute to look over the menu. But I knew what I wanted. I knew what I needed. I started flipping through my menu looking for the only thing I really had a taste for. Michonne….
