Another day of school...
Nicole shut her locker and walked towards her classroom. She hated school but wanted good grades nonetheless. Sitting down at her desk, she placed her book bag on it and rummaged through it, looking for the correct book. Pulling out her history book, she set the bag down beside her on the floor, turning the pages to where she last left off.
"Let us continue on with page 113.", the teacher spoke up, bringing Nicole out of her focus. "Chapter 9. Start reading. You have fifteen minutes." he finished. Nicole was a speed reader but was easily distracted. Her mind started to wonder as her eyes swiftly moved across the page, not taking in any of the information in her book.
I wonder what he's up to...
"Nicole?"
"Nicole."
A voice startled her from her dreamland, her ears shot straight up and quickly looked up at her teacher, standing in front of her. He adjusted his tie and sat up straight, walking back to his desk. "What is the answer to question 5, Ms. Nicole?" he asked in a calm tone, yet strictly, as if he knew she wasn't paying attention. Thankfully, she already knew this from the internet, so she simply answered. "It is Franklin D. Roosevelt, sir.". "...Correct. Thank you," he spoke, convinced she had been listening. The rest of the eyes in the classroom turned their focus back to their desks and Nicole silently sighed. She smoothed the creases out of her silky little blue skirt and spoke to herself in her mind. Is he out of class yet? I should eat la late lunch with him. But what does he eat? What do wolf people eat? I bet he likes meat. Maybe a bologna sandwich? No, that's too plain. He deserves the best. Maybe beef stew? But the school doesn't make soup, not after that incident with Kaitlynn. She put laxatives in the school soup and everyone was sent either home or to the nurse room. She was suspended from school. Maybe he likes-
"Come on, Nicole! School's out!". A hand dragged her from her seat and out into the hallways. Her classmate who she didn't truly know was skipping down the halls, pulling her along. Nicole remembers her name was Sylvanna, but she remembered the name by calling her Sylver in her head. Sylvanna was a very positive person, not letting anyone tell her down. She was an influence on everyone around her. If she was happy, it was impossible to not be happy with her. If she was sad, everyone was sad. She was the sunshine behind the clouds, giving everyone around her the feelings she had.
She also always smells like vanilla cupcakes.
Nicole liked that about her.
"I'm meeting a friend at the pizza place down the street! Wanna come?". That's it! Nicole thought. That's where he would enjoy eating! "...Sure. Whose your friend?". "Tyler! Duh! Remember him from middle school? He was the only kid who could make it across the WHOLE monkey bars!". Sylvanna threw her hands out, her large unforgettable smile beaming across her face. She sometimes acted like she was still a kid, but that was okay with Nicole. It made her happy to see her in a lively mood. "Right, him. I'll bring a friend along, too. Meet you in 10?" she said, checking the time on her phone. "Yeppsies! See you then!~" Sylvanna hopped along until she was out of sight in the crowd of students. Nicole sighed and started towards his locker down the hall. She leaned against the locker next to his and fell deep into her realm of thought. Until a finger tapped her shoulder gently. "Hey.". She looked up, Ame stood in front of her, a blank expression on his face. Adjusting her skirt at the bottom, she looked up into his eyes to maintain a focus. "I wanted t-to ask if you wanted... to meet up with Sylvanna and Tyler at the pizza place down the street..." she tripped over her own words, why am I so nervous? She wondered. He's your best friend. "Sounds nice. Sure, I'll go with you. Is this considered a date?" he chuckled, knowing she longed to actually go out somewhere with him other than each other's houses every week. "D-date?...-Yes! A date! N-now come on, we can't keep them waiting!". A bead of sweat formed on her head as she walked, the halls were clearing as everyone left for the day, either outside the school's grounds or leaving to go home. He followed quickly behind.
They arrived at the building, Sylvanna waved her hands above her head. They were sitting at a table together, saving two spots for Nicole and Ame. They sat down and chatted for a moment before the waitress came out with their food. There was small chattering and laughter as everyone ate, but Nicole stayed quiet, sitting in the corner of the booth. Ame glanced over beside him, seeing she wasn't talking. "What's wrong?". She averted her eyes and her ears swiveled his direction. He caught onto what this meant, and turned back to the others. "Thank you for paying, Tyler." he said, brushing his hands against his napkin. "No problem, man! See you later, dude!" Tyler responded, setting his phone on the table. Ame stood up, Nicole slid out from the booth and followed him outside. He leaned with his back against the wall and smiled at her. "Too crowded for you, huh?" he laughed lightly. She glanced up at him with a nervous smile, and he took her hand. "Hey. Don't worry about making a good impression on me. You already are a great impression, just being my friend.".
Friends...
Am I really only that much in his eyes?
She held back the urge to cry, and looked away from him, pulling her hand away.
Why can't he see he's more than a friend?
He doesn't feel the same way back. Just forget it...
Her thoughts were cut off by a hand moving the hair out of her eyes and a kiss planted on her nose. His hand rested on the back of her neck, holding her head up, the other hand keeping the hair out of his way; holding the kiss. A blush spread quickly across her face, making the tips of her lynx ears blush too. After what felt like hours, but was only a mere few seconds, he pulled away, ruffling her ears and shoving his hands in his jacket pockets. He smiled and walked off.
She stood there stunned for a moment, before blinking and looking back at him.
"...See you tomorrow?"
"Yeah. No school. Movie night?"
"Okay.".
And that was that.
