A Game of Chess
Disclaimer: Yes I do own Doctor Who... in my dreams
This is just a short story with the Doctor and Rose, there is no real point to it.
Rose looked up from the chess board at the doctor sitting opposite her. He seemed unaware of her gaze as he frowned down at the pieces, working out his next move. They were sitting cross-legged on the control room floor the chess game between them, it was one of the few and far between days when they just stayed in the time vortex. The doctor disliked staying still for very long but the TARDIS needed the occasional break to cool down as did Rose. She liked staying in from time to time and just doing things quietly, like reading or watching the doctor fix something, but chess! Why she had ever agreed to play she would never know, she had never particularly enjoyed it.
He had made his move and was now waiting for her reaction. Glancing at the board she inwardly groaned, she had been relying on that rook to check his king but now his queen had taken it. She knew he was going easy on her (other wise she would have lost in about the second move) but he was still beating her by far. She was starting to get fed up with the whole thing, there was no way she could win. She had already given up trying to get her queen back after sending six pawns towards the end of the board, none had made it, and now she had lost her second rook. She could start sending in her knights but that queen was in a deadly position. She sighed and just moved her knight, at least it would finish the game quickly.
The doctor still hadn't made his move and looking up she realised he was staring at her as if she had green horns or something.
"Er...your move." she pointed out wondering if she had just grown horns
"Are you sure you want to move there?" He asked disbelievingly, indicating her knight.
She crossed her arms and glared "What's wrong with it?"
"I could easily take it." He pointed at his queen
"It would get taken any way" she snapped. She was angry at the whole stupid game, she just wanted to get it over with. If there was one game that annoyed and confused her more she was yet to play it. The doctor looked horrified
"You can't just give up!" for all his nine hundred and something years it was amazing how much he could sound like a disappointed four year old.
"I just don't like chess and I already gave up the impossible task of trying to win a long time ago."
The doctor studied the board for a minute.
"You could actually win here. If you take back that move with the knight and instead move your bishop here, then logicically I would move my knight here and you would move your pawn here..."
He the proceeded to commence a game of chess against himself showing her all the moves she could make but which she knew she would never think to do.
"...then you move your knight here and there you are, checkmate!"
She had to smile at the massive grin on his face
"There is a problem though"
he grin was replaced by a look of confusion
"What problem?"
"I don't have your brains!"
