Today is December 18th, 6 days before I will fly down to Florida to meet
my mother and Phill for Christmas. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes, stuffing an apple flavored granola bar in my
sweater pocket. As I began to gulp down the rest of the orange juice straight from
the carton, I spotted Charlie stepping into his squeaky black boots.
"I'll see you later, Bells. Busy day at work." He glanced out at the blanket of snow,
flakes still falling ever so suddenly from the sky.
"Be careful out there, okay? There's been alot of reported accidents- y'know, cars skidding on the ice."
"I'll put my snow chains on." I promised, which seemed to relax his tense shoulders. "I'll see you at 5." He said, then left. I watched as he slushed through the snow, wiped his boots on the driveway, before stepping into his cruiser. Suddenly, I was worried. I wasn't a great driver as is- never mind all this ice. To reassure myself, I grabbed the snow chains and opened the door. The blast of cold air made me shiver as I crunched along through the mess of wet. Cold weather. Ugh.
- When the snow chain job was done, I stepped into my nice warm truck, rubbing my hands together as the heater started up. The engine roared to life, as usual making me cringe. I laughed at myself, trying to tune my radio into a non-fuzzy station. Impossible. -
The trip to Forks High school wasn't bad- of course, until I took a look at the parking lot.
There was a thick coat of black ice, glinting threatenengly in the sunlight. I hit the ice on second gear, thinking I could handle it. Boy was I wrong. I swerved to one side, narrowly avoiding a tree. My breaths were cut into gasps for air as I clutched the steering wheel for dear life. Can things get any worse? And then I spotted a fellow classmate, Tyler, just getting out of his car. "Look out!" I screamed, screeching to a stop. I guess I stopped to quickly- there was no time to think of an escape as I felt my truck begin to topple over.
And that's when the world went black.
