"Promise me you'll come back!" her sister shouted, her tear-filled eyes glistened before the drops fell onto her flushed cheeks.
"I promise, Laurel. I'll be back, and we'll be richer than anyone in the district!" she replied with fake-enthusiasm. Of course, no one noticed the phony smiles and clenched jaw as she lied through her teeth (she's always been quite the actress). See, she's watched the Games all sixteen years of her life, and she knows what they do to the tributes. The false personalities in the Training Center and during the interviews with the famous Caesar Flickerman drove her crazy. It made her sick to think that would be her the next week. But she could get over that. What really frightened her were the actual Games. The games changed people. She knew she wouldn't come back (not as herself).
Twenty-three tributes died; one would come back alive and victorious (at least that's what everyone thought). Navi knew better. The final tributes always killed themselves.
A/N: I don't know if that made sense, so I'll explain: A random tribute girl notices the games change the winner and so they don't really survive because they pretty much kill themselves with nightmares and bad memories and trying to evade them with things like drinking (Haymitch and Chaff), morphling overdose (the two district six tributes), etc. It made sense to meā¦but I'm pretty weird.
This is dedicated to NoOrdinaryFanGirl, because I love her. :D
