Jack woke up abruptly. It was as if he was in a nightmare, a nightmare that even waking up wouldn't get rid of.
He floated in the darkness for a while, before going to take a step and realizing there was no ground to walk on. Terrified, Jack flailed his limbs until he breached the surface of the frozen lake. The first thing he saw was the moon, and the calm whisper of 'Jack. You are Jack Frost'.
In the distance there was movement- invisible to those not looking for any, so Jack climbed out from the ice shards that had trapped him only a few moments ago. Stepping forward, he glanced down at the strangely-shaped stick at his feet. He nudged it gently before bending down and picking it up.
Frost danced invitingly among the surface of the object as he touched it lightly, now obvious that it was a staff of some sort. Jack smirked and took another tentative step forwards before gasping at the sight below him.
Everywhere he touched, ice spiraled away from his body! He ran forwards with the staff, keeping up the pace as he twirled around gracefully, watching the winter-y images follow his path. Eventually, he reached the end of the lake, going to touch a nearby tree before a thought crossed his mind.
Instead, he extended the arm with the staff, wielding it like a weapon. He poked the trunk of the tree, giggling lightly as it spread frost once again. It was no longer an nightmare, now a happy dream.
The silence broke. Jack spun quickly, watching as the shadows the moonlight had cast moved. Sinister laughter clouded his brain, his body pleading with him to run, to get away from whoever was there.
A cloaked figure moved towards him in swift strides, "And who might you be? You don't seem like one of those Guardians, that is for sure..." the figure trailed off, sneering at the thought.
"W- Who-" Jack cut himself off, clearing his throat, " Who are you? And who are the 'guardians'?"
The man, it appeared, was lost in thought, "I am Pitch Black. And you are...?"
"Jack Frost, I think."
"Jack... never heard of that before. You must be new..." he mused, "Come with me. I'll tell you everything you need to know."
Jack nodded, confused, before tightening his grip on the staff in his hand and following closely behind 'Pitch Black'.
Being behind him, he didn't see the wide grin that spread across his face.
