"Exactly what are you accusing me of here, Steve?" Danny asked as he slid in to sit on the bench opposite Kamekona's shrimp truck. Steve was pretty sure they'd had this conversation more than once already; it wasn't his fault that Danny was too stubborn in his opinion that Steve was, in fact, a rabbit that he saw his truthful point as doggedness.
"Well, let's put it this way. If it were between you and a big, tattooed guy called 'Bubba' in an all-you-can-eat grease-fest, I'd be putting my money on you."
"So, you're saying I eat too much?" Steve pondered his question lightly as he ogled the oily plate of seafood Danny was tucking into.
"Yes."
"I'll have you know that I work a highly mobile job due, in no little part, to a certain Navy SEAL who obviously doesn't understand that humans need energy to do things. Energy comes from food. So I eat." He'd started doing the explanation mostly with his hands causing tiny pieces of fried shrimp to fly across the table.
"I don't even eat that much. I think you'll find it's you, in comparison, with the eating disorder."
"There is nothing wrong with what I eat" Steve defended himself.
"If you think lettuce three times a day is sufficient fuel for you careening about endangering peoples' lives then I'm concerned. No, well, I'm pretty sure already that you have something psychologically wrong." He tapped pointedly at his own head.
"Again, there is nothing wrong with being healthy. At least I know that I'm not going to keel over from clogged arteries when I'm 47"
"47? Where did you pluck that arbitrary number from? And I'll have you know that I am genetically fit as a fiddle."
Steve looked at Danny in disbelief; partly for the genetics comment but more so for the metaphor he'd decided to use today.
A sudden, shrill ringing broke the two from their squabbling and Steve resigned temporarily from the fight, picking up his phone.
"McGarrett."
A short, mostly one-sided conversation ensued before Steve gave a final murmur, hung up and stood to go.
"Come on, we've got a case - and leave the heart attack here."
A/N Kind of a prompt fic. I hope the characterisations are all right but I admit I didn't write this extremely recently.. Hope you enjoyed, b/c I know I missed their squabbling between seasons.
