Basilisk Attack
He had never felt so shocked in his entire life.
He had honestly not expected Harry of all people to be attacked by the basilisk. He was almost positive Harry was at least a half-blood like he was. Shock had filled his system when Slughorn had told him that Harry had been attacked and was now lying in the Hospital Wing.
He had felt the pitying eyes on him as he had rushed from the dungeons up to the Hospital Wing. He did not pay any of the people he passed any attention. His mind was focused solely on Harry and his own horror of what he had caused.
He had slammed the door open and looked to the bed that was surrounded by white curtains. No one bothered to stop him as he ripped the curtains apart.
Harry was so still. He looked as if he had been carved of marble and if he was too rough the other boy would simply shatter and break.
Despite being the cause of Harry's condition he had no cure for it. There was no way to undo the effects of the basilisk's stare without waiting for the mandrakes to finish growing.
It seemed as if Harry had not been entirely sure that he would not be attacked despite Tom's promises. His frozen body told Tom that he had still been using a mirror to glance around corners.
Tom was glad he did. He could not begin to think of what would have happened if Harry had not been careful. Harry could have died and there was no cure for death. He would have had to live with that guilt forever.
Tom reached to hold Harry's other hand.
He heard the sound of crinkling parchment when he covered Harry's hand. Curiously, tugged the loosely held parchment and after some careful work it came free, almost as if Harry had planned it to be that way and had held it like that specifically so only he would find it.
Tom opened it out and folded it flat. He was surprised to find that it was indeed a letter for him that Harry had written before he had been attacked.
Dear Tom,
I'm sorry for doing this to you but it is the only way for them not to suspect you of being behind the attacks but you have to have at least one more after this. Try not to kill anyone else would you?
Love,
Harry
The note was short and concise but held so much.
Harry had known of him being behind the attacks yet had not stopped him and had even faced the possibility of dying if he had made a mistake just to get the suspicion off him.
It made Tom feel much worse than he already was because he knew that Tom's attacks on students went against Harry's very morals yet Harry was willing to help him stay out of trouble.
He had never had anyone do anything like that for him before.
Had a Slytherin gotten hold of that information they would have used it against him as blackmail material.
Tom stuffed the letter into his pocket when the healer came around to chase him out for the night.
Tom would follow Harry's instructions but that would be the last attack. The Chamber of Secrets would remain closed after that.
Harry had been right. It was not worth the cost.
