I knew there was something wrong when I began to notice his hats. Well, not his hats specifically, everyone knew about his hats, but the fact that his hats always matched his outfits. And from there, I noticed how on good days, he always wore pink, those days when he had rehearsals or drama class. He never wore pink on other days, I knew that, and it intrigued me a little that he didn't. I used that as a sign, a reminder, pink meant drama, right?

He was wearing pink again, that made me do a double take. Drama class wasn't that day, and I was pretty sure he had no rehearsals either.

"Good rehearsal?" I asked him, curiosity always got the better of me.

"Rehearsal? No, didn't have it today, Shar lets me go sometimes," he laughed, and it made me want to laugh too. Infectious, I think the word is. "I guess I just look happy, right? I had a date last night. Seeing him again tonight."

So pink didn't just mean drama anymore. It meant dates. With guys. It was no secret that Ryan was gay, he was proud of the fact, proud of who he was. But in all the time I knew him well he hadn't actually had a date.

He wore pink more and more, almost everyday. He was happier. Then he brought his boyfriend to meet us all. Aiden Smith. I tried to hate him, I guess. He was disrupting my order, the way I saw the world. But he was so nice, so kind, so open. So indisputably Ryan.

"Pink suits you," I blurted out. It was a drama day, we had all had rehearsal actually. I was a member of the ensemble. Nothing too important, but with my sports schedule I couldn't commit to anything huge.

"Oh, thanks," he replied, slightly shocked, I think, that I had even noticed what he was wearing.

"Its just ... well, you always wear it when you're happy. Pink suits you," I tried to explain what I meant, in my opinion I made it worst, but he just smiled and nodded, like he understood completely. I knew I was blushing furiously, and I could tell from the not entirely un-Sharpay-like smirk on his face that he knew exactly why I was blushing.

It was about a week later, we had rehearsals again, but he wasn't wearing pink. I must have looked a complete idiot, staring at him with my mouth open. He wasn't wearing pink, but it was a drama day.

"Rehearsals are today, right?" I caught up with him to ask.

"Of course, we told you yesterday, remember?" he smiled, as if he expected the question, but was feigning ignorance as to the actual meaning behind it.

"Its just- I mean, are you ok?"

"Just a little upset, I broke up with Aiden yesterday," I didn't miss the wording - I broke up with.

"Oh, why?"

"I like someone else more," Ryan laughed slightly at the look on my face, I probably looked a picture with a cross between shock and delight on my face, before training it into curiosity.

The next day wasn't a drama day, but he wore pink anyway. I didn't bother to ask why, he didn't have to tell me. He showed me as soon as we arrived at school. Approaching me in the middle of the hallway, and kissing me like that. Well, it was hard to miss.

He stopped wearing pink on drama days altogether, but he still wore it. I just used it to remind me what days our dates were on instead.
