It'll Always Hurt…
Kenshin crouched in his room. The pain… it hurt so much… his scars…
He wondered why… the pain would strike unexpectedly. Weren't they healed?
He tried to stay still, without shivering in pain. He focused so much to control it and didn't notice Kaoru watching him by the door.
She had noticed him wince a couple of times while they were chatting over breakfast. He had excused himself to his room, walking with his left shoulder slouched and his right shoulder stiffly stuck to his side. Kaoru had followed him with worry clouding her mind.
"Kenshin…are you ok?" she asked softly as she entered the room.
"K…Kaoru …" he stuttered, shocked to find her there. "It…It's nothing," he mumbled as he tried to stand up only to crouch back down again when the pain struck his body, mind, soul. Kaoru ran to his side. She ushered him to sit as she pulled back his hair that hung by his side. She saw tears in his eyes as she brushed the orange strands of hair from his face.
"Kenshin…why are you crying?" she caressed his cheek and tilted his head to face her.
"The scars… they hurt…they're healed but they hurt" He whispered in her ear, as she embraced him. He wanted to return her hug but he didn't dare, afraid that the pain would come back.
"Scars? The one on your cheek? Wait… you have more?" She asked, confused, as she let go of him. Kenshin nodded.
"Can I look at them?"
Kenshin tried not to move so much as he slipped out of his (umm???) hakama(??? I forgot what it's called?!!!). Kaoru gasped when she saw all the scars on his back. Three lines stretched across his back from his right shoulder, continuing diagonally downwards to the base of his back, another line straight across them, horizontally. She lightly traced the lines, her eyes roaming his back, eyeing every other scar that added to the decoration on Kenshin's back. She finally saw what she knew was the answer to why his shoulders were always uneven. There were three short lines, about an inch long each, on his right shoulder. Just by looking, she could tell that the cuts were deep. She grazed her fingertips against the three lines. Kenshin winced and Kaoru drew back her hand.
"I'm sorry," she said panic stricken.
"No..No, it's okay. It's been hurting ever since I got it… must be something internally. It really hurts though, but not most of the time," he replied, making her calm down. She sighed deeply.
"I have another scar though, it's worse, and may never heal," he mumbled, looking down. He frowned, out of her sight, and a tear fell from his eyes.
"Kenshin… it's okay," she whispered as she hugged him again. "Cry all you want… it's okay," she said soothingly into his ears as she rubbed his back lightly.
"Pain never leaves someone. It's always there. We can forget it but it's always somewhere in our hearts. Just remember that you can share pain, so that you don't have to suffer all alone, at least, so that someone can comfort you. It hurts a lot, I know. It'll always hurt…"
