Flutist Rider

"Kate, honey, wake up."

Kate groaned she did not want to get up. She opened her eyes and saw it was dark the only illumination coming from a flickering candle on the table.

"Kate please hurry up we have to go." Kate turned her head and saw her father getting some of her stuff into a pack.

"Why?" she asked drowsily. But she got up and stretched, yawning. "Anyway its dark outside."

"Just hurry up honey. We have to get away from here" he hesitated. "I'll explain later."

Kate woke up completely at the urgency of her fathers' voice.

"Finish packing. Just get what's absolutely necessary" he said handing her the pack and leaving the room.

Kate hurriedly changed and packed something's she couldn't be with out. She hesitated with her flute. Her father had said only the necessary things. But the flute meant allot to her so she finally decided to take it along and put it in the pack. With that she closed it and took it to the kitchen were her father was putting meat into another pack.

The door opened and a young man stepped inside. "Hi Kate." He greeted.

"Hi Shawn" Kate replied wondering why her friend was here. Her father looked up from tying the pack. He got up and handed it to Shawn.

"Have you saddled the horses already?" he asked anxiously. Shawn nodded his head.

"I had a very tired time trying to saddle that devil of hers" he nodded at Kate.

"What can't handle my little Angel?" Kate sneered. Angel was the name of the stallion a friend had given to her. The same friend that had given her the flute.

"Just hurry up I have to get some more things ready" her father said hurriedly. Both teens nodded. Kate followed Shawn to the barn.

"Hello Angel" she said walking to the ebony stallion and patting his neck.

She started to accommodate the packs in the saddle when she finished her father was there and gave her a boost into the saddle.

Her father handed her another pack. It was kind of round and a bit heavy. She wondered what it was. She expected her father to get into his horses saddle but he led Angel outside. He grabbed her arm tightly as if he never wanted to let go.

"Listen, Kate," he started hoarsely "you and Shawn have to go to the Varden with this" he patted the parcel "it is a dragon egg. The king did not know of it until a while back. You must take it to the Varden" he repeated "It will be safer there until it c hoses it's Rider understand."

Kate nodded her head. She was shocked. She couldn't believe it; she didn't want to believe it. Yet she knew it was true.

"That's my girl now you two must go. I shall forestall the soldiers. They do not know that I know they are coming for me. So they won't expect any surprises. Now leave."

He turned and closed the doors. Without saying anything Kate and Shawn led the horses towards the city gates. There were no guards there. When they crossed the gate Kate looked back as if hoping to see her father running towards them but the street was empty.

They put there horses into full gallop when they heard the city's alarm wail behind them. Kate clunged to the dragon egg, tears streaming down her cheeks.
