A Promise
It was a gloomy day with the clouds threatening to spill over. Everyone stood in silence as the black coffin was lowered into the ground. Soldiers and Alchemist attended the funeral. Most were only there because they knew it was respectful to go not because the really cared.
Roy stood in the background as the coffin disappeared. Al and Winry were a wreck. Al was trying to keeping the sobbing girl from collapsing, while barley being able to hold himself up. Armstrong went over to them and held them silent tears flowing from his eyes.
The whole thing was quite morbid. Once the coffin had been cover with dirt everyone left. The few people who remained were Al, Winry, Armstrong, and Roy, who stood quietly behind them.
Al let go of Winry so he could say his final good byes. "My brother", he began, "I will always love and miss you and I hope you get to see mom wherever you are." He patted the mound of dirt and began to walk away.
Winry was able to pull herself together enough to say her goodbye as well. "Ed" she said trailing off a bit, "I love you, you are like a brother to me and I'll always love you". She began to weep harder and turned to leave with Al.
Armstrong said nothing just saluted, gave a nod and walked away. He did however mutter "goodbye" and let more silent tears slip down his cheeks.
Roy walk past them, shaking. They all nodded to him knowing he needed to say his goodbyes alone. He collapsed in front of the grave. He read the the words on out loud to his self. Smiling at what the very bottom said. "our short friend will forever be missed". He knew Ed was swearing his head off some where. He let out at small chuckle at that thought before letting quiet sobs escape his lips.
After a few minuets of silence he spoke. "Ed, I'm so sorry I didn't protect you liked I had promised. I'm sorry I didn't make it to you in time and that when I was there, I couldn't help you". He played the scene back in his mind. Ed had been stabbed by a major criminal he had been after. He had never even seen him coming, he was hit from behind. Roy remembered what his body had looked like. The blood draining out of him and onto the road. He could remember the expression on his face as he tried to cling to life. He remembered how he held the boy in his arms, telling him that he would be fine. That an ambulance that came just minuet to later would save him. He especially remembered how Ed had whispered the words "I love you, Roy" as life slipped from him.
Roy snapped out of his daze and returned to the cold truth of the grave that sat before him. Then he said "I'm most of all sorry that I- I never told you how I felt...I love you Fullmetal, I love you". He repeated the words a few more times before he let the tears consume him. Roy got up and just before he left he said "Ed, I now know why you transmuted your mother". Then as he walked out of the gate of the cemetery he muttered, "I'm about to do what you did Ed, but unlike you I promise I will succeed". He let a few more tears slip out before he got in his care and drove off.
