It takes a while to develop a fire. First you need friction, then sparks and then fire. Now, that may not seem like many steps, but it takes time to go through each step.

1. Friction

When Percy and Annabeth first met all there was between them was friction. Their personalities clashed, they fought constantly and the fact that their parents were mortal enemies didn't help. As they traveled across the country to try and find the master bolt they continuously rubbed each other the wrong way. Over their continuous quests they never really stopped causing friction, but that just created more sparks, a bigger fire.

2. Sparks

It took time, but as Percy held Annabeth in the air bubble at the bottom of Siren Bay they both felt the smallest of sparks, and the smallest of things can start a revolution.

It was that spark that caused Annabeth to kiss Percy after that chariot race and Percy to run across the country for Annabeth the following winter. Slowly the sparks grew and caught, making their feelings grow.

Ironically enough it was in the middle of a volcano that the fire finally lit. As Annabeth pressed her lips against Percy's for a split second a fire ignited in the pit of her stomach. Percy felt that fire too, but as the son of the sea god it quickly got extinguished. An ember fostered in the bottom of his stomach and it wasn't until Annabeth took a knife for him that it finally ignited his heart.

The fire in their hearts turned into an inferno as he turned down immortality for her and she kissed him on his birthday. Not even the water in the canoe lake, an eight month separation or a deadly quest could put out the flames, only fan them.
