(Disclaimer: I don't own Tangled. I'm not sure how I ended up writing something for Tangled, but here we go anyway.)

It worked! It worked! The amber was breaking, and nothing else mattered. It was working and the amber was chipping away from Quirin.

The amber fell away, breaking harmlessly against the ground. Quirin started to fall over too. He had been in the amber for a while. It probably wasn't easy to just leap to his feet.

"Dad!" Varian shouted.

He ran over and tried to help his dad stand. It could've gone better honestly. Varian fell back a little ways with him, but at least Quirin didn't face plant into the ground.

"Dad, you're okay," Varian said.

Quirin looked at him, blinking a few times. "Varian?"

Varian nodded. "I got you out Dad. You were frozen in the amber but I-"

"You got me out? And you didn't even have to kidnap royalty to do so." His tone had changed from surprised to cold really fast.

"Dad?"

Quirin seemed to be regaining his footing, standing up, and Varian took a step back. Something was wrong. There was far too much accusation in his expression.

"Do you think I don't know what's going on? Do you think I wasn't awake to witness every terrible thing you've done?" Quirin asked. He hadn't raised his voice, but that was not a good tone. "You kidnapped the queen, and tried to kill her. Twice. Who never did anything to you I might add. Not to mention the rest of the royal family and Cassandra."

Okay that summary was clearly an exaggeration. Varian didn't know what could possibly be the second time he tried to kill the queen except maybe trying to encase her in amber, which couldn't be right because it wouldn't have killed her, but . . . Quirin had been conscious in the amber? That didn't make sense.

"Just what did you think you were doing?"

"Trying to save you!" Varian shouted.

"By killing people and sending robots to kill even more?" Quirin asked. "No. You just wanted your own satisfaction." He walked past Varian. Varian wanted to stop him, wanted to make him understand, but he couldn't seem to move. In fact, with each step Quirin took the room seemed to get larger, and darker, making them further apart. "Don't bother explaining," Quirin continued as he reached the door. He looked back at Varian. "I want nothing to do with you."

Then he opened the door and left.

Varian woke up. His eyes snapped open and he gasped. Ruddiger, clearly picking up on his distress, climbed onto his shoulder and patted him. Varian didn't pay much attention. For a second he didn't recognize where he was. Then. . .

Oh right. I got arrested, he thought.

He was glad he hadn't had a more dramatic reaction, like sitting up or screaming. That would attract attention he'd rather avoid. Still, it was a little hard to shake.

Varian sat up and breathed, trying to calm down. This wasn't even his worst dream about freeing his dad. He'd had one where Quirin was dead after he broke the amber, or couldn't remember anything about his life, including Varian. This one. . .

Well this one clearly wasn't true. It wasn't Varian's fault. It was Rapunzel's. Anyone should be able to see that. He'd done what he had to do and when Quirin was free from the amber . . . well he'd be free, nothing else would matter.

Satisfied for the moment, Varian pet Ruddiger's head a few times.
