Blaine huffed as Kurt straightened his navy blue bow tie for him, before turning back to the mirror to check his own hair one last time. Blaine had voiced his opinions about the company Kurt chose for their double date tonight and Kurt had said the same thing each time.
"He has really changed, Blaine," Kurt explained. He turned his back to the mirror and placed his hands on his boyfriend's defined shoulders. "Besides, there's someone special he wants us to meet." Kurt wiggled his eyebrows and was rewarded with a light laugh from Blaine.
"It's still not okay. What he did to you." Kurt followed Blaine's gaze to his lips and then back up to his eyes. Kurt offered Blaine a sad smile. Kurt had forgiven Karofsky long ago for stealing his first kiss. His boyfriend, though, was not so understanding. He had confided in Kurt shortly after they had become a couple that he wished he had been Kurt's first kiss. Kurt swelled with happiness upon hearing that and assured Blaine that their first kiss was the one he counted.
"It wasn't okay, but it is now." Kurt slid his hands from Blaine's shoulders down to his hands, holding them gently. "David has had a rough year. We're going to go to dinner with him and his new boyfriend. You're going to be nice and everyone will have a great time, okay?" Blaine couldn't help but smile and nod. Kurt gave his hands a light squeeze before dropping one and pulling him toward the door. "And I promise," Kurt said, "you're only one I'm kissing tonight."
Kurt and Blaine arrived before Dave and his mystery man. They ordered drinks, a Dr. Pepper for Blaine and a raspberry iced tea for Kurt. Small talk was made about their respective days. Kurt told a story about a particularly horrid customer at the garage that day while Blaine talked about his get-together with Tina to talk about the upcoming year for the New Directions.
"So, what kind of guy do you David is going to bring?" Kurt asked, a smirk playing on his face.
"Probably a carbon copy of you," Blaine answered. Kurt raised his eyebrows. "I mean, he was in love with you for years. You're his type." Blaine swirled his straw in his drink, his eyes staying on Kurt.
"You think so? I bet it's a jock. A guy you would never expect to be gay, like him. David would have nothing in common with someone like me. He needs someone to talk football with. You'd be a better match for him than I ever would be." Blaine had to laugh at that.
"I guess we'll just have to wait and see." Blaine saw Kurt's eyes look in the direction of the opening door.
"Wait no more. They're here." Blaine turned his head and they watched as Dave was led toward their table by the hostess, his mate hidden behind his thick frame. Blaine, ever the gentleman, stood to greet them as they drew near.
"Hey guys," Dave smiled, shaking Blaine's hand and waving to Kurt. A smaller man with glasses appeared from behind David, ready to greet them. Blaine smiled at his eager demeanor. "Kurt, Blaine, I'd like you to meet my boyfriend, Chandler."
Blaine offered his hand to the boy along with a greeting, but he seemed to be stuck staring at Kurt, mouth agape. Blaine couldn't blame him. His boyfriend was gorgeous. His smirk toward his other half died on his lips when he saw Kurt was looking the same way right back at Chandler.
Chandler.
Chandler.
"O-oh my God," Blaine stuttered. He pulled himself to his feet with shaky hands, pushing himself to walk as far away from this table as he could get. He heard Kurt offer an "excuse me" to his friends and called after him.
"Blaine!" He didn't turn around. He was already heading out the door, on his way to the car. "Blaine, stop." He couldn't say no to Kurt. Head hanging, he turned to face Kurt with his hands on his hips. "I didn't know it was going to be him."
"I'm not having dinner with Chandler, Kurt," Blaine said, adding extra emphasis to the t. Tears began welling in his eyes, almost about to spill over. All of the pain he felt when he first discovered Kurt's textual relationship with this Chandler boy came rushing back with such force. It felt like the air had been knocked out of his lungs.
"Do you think I'm thrilled about this, Blaine?" Kurt asked incredulously. "I understand how you're upset about this, but this isn't about us. This is about David and his chance at happiness." He didn't mean to raise his voice. He was just as shocked as Blaine, but this was not the way to deal with it. "Chandler is David's first boyfriend. We are here to support him, not to make him feel terrible for liking this boy." Blaine deflated as Kurt took small steps toward him. "Can we please just go back in there and be the support that David needs?"
Seeing Blaine wipe his eyes with his sleeve nearly broke Kurt's heart. In one quick stride, Kurt was there, drying the remaining tears with his thumbs. Blaine dropped his gaze to the ground before taking Kurt's hands in his. He knew Kurt was right. He sniffled.
"I'm only going in there for you." Kurt gave him the best smile he could muster and brought their intertwined hands to his lips, kissing the back of Blaine's fingers.
"I love you so much." Blaine smiled miserably as he was pulled in the direction of Breadstix and the most uncomfortable dinner of his life.
