The world around us is not, as the scientists say, made up of atoms and molecules, of cells and proteins and elements. It is made of dreams and fears, of hopes and wishes, of stories and of magic. Every blade of grass is a piece of breath, every passing cloud is a fragment of memory. We make ourselves. We make our world.
They say this is a city. That it is built on greed and complacency, on oppression and alienation, that it is made of dull, grey concrete and pollution. But we see the paintings on the walls and the sideways, full of color and joy and creativity. We see the churches on the hill, their rooftops carving designs against the backdrop of sunset. We see the sky.
We pull our memories down from the clouds and build a garden with them. A flower has grown here, from the gravel, in the heart of the city. We formed it with our hands, with our dreams and our fears, with our hopes and our wishes, with our stories. We leave behind what we once were and become what we will be, what we wish to be and what we must be.
Our world changes by the hour, by the minute, as we ourselves change. We must have a storyteller to remind us of what was and what will be. To honor those who built this place, to tell of where they came from, and of where and who they are now. I am that storyteller. They call me the Drummer.
I tell this to new members of our community, how and why we came to be, what we are made of. They understand slowly, strip themselves of their old fears and prejudices and bonds and identity, and come into our realm, our garden. For it is not only the world around us which is made of dreams. It is we ourselves.
A/N: This fic is specifically for Le Sillon des Rêves, but it could apply to most Cirque shows, I think... Varekai comes to mind in particular, except obviously it's not set in a city. For those of you who haven't seen Les Chemins Invisibles, you can think of it kind of like Varekai minus an Icarus and set under a highway overpass.
Every once in a while I do one of these mood-setting things as opposed to writing a fanfic with a story line... I like this, I just kinda wish it was longer. Anyone have any suggestions for that?
