A Sayo and Sano fanfic.

Sanosuke watched as the ship for Holland sailed out into the ocean. His heart ached as he remembered Sayo. She was the first woman he could ever fall in love with though he regret not confessing his love before she died. He still had a lot of things to say, he still wants to know more of her and love her, but everything just happened too fast. All he could do is store all those precious but short moments they had together in his heart and mind.
"If only she were alive…" Sanosuke thought sadly and walked away.
Late that night, Sanosuke was getting drunk with sake, hoping it will drown all the heartaches away.
"Sayo… why did you have to die? I love you, I want to marry you and have children with you and… grow old with you" Sanosuke said in a drunken tone, loitering around the streets.
" I wonder where Sanosuke is." Yoshi told Kenshin.
"I don't know, but I think he needs to be alone this time" Kenshin replied.
"eh?"
"Yeah, he's still trying to recover from Lady Magdalia's death" added Kaoru, who happen to overhear their conversation.
"Well, I couldn't blame him either, Lady Magdalia was really beautiful." Yoshi said.
" Come on inside you guys, Dinner is ready!" Misao called.
Sanosuke went to visit Sayo's grave that night. He lay on the grass, staring at the night
starry sky above him. He closed his eyes, constantly reminiscing the memories. He saw her face, that beautiful angelic face he'd always remember.
When he opened his eyes, he could still see Sayo's vision, her beautiful emerald eyes still seem to sparkle at him.
"Wait…" Sano blinked again. "Sayo?"
She nodded with a smile.
Sano's heart began to race. He tried to hug her, but he couldn't feel anything.
"b..but w…why?"
"Sanosuke… I came back for you, but I'm just a mere soul now and I was allowed to stay with you here on Earth… do…you want me to stay?"
tears were pooling around Sanosuke's eyes. " it doesn't matter, Sayo. Just please, stay with me forever" He said, his voice filled with intense emotions.
He tried to hold her delicate hands, though all he could feel was cold wind. " I love you, Sayo, I really do"
" I do, too Sanosuke, I love you too" She said teary-eyed. "oh, I wish I could feel you again… your warm body"
"Sayo…just stay by my side forever. I'm more than content with that." Sanosuke said before he kissed her.
The kiss might feel just like the wind but it was the best kiss sano could ever wished for.
"Sanosuke, wherever you go, I'm always here."
Days passed and Sanosuke couldn't be more happier than now. Because Sayo was with him, though she was non-existent to the others. They start their day together and spend each day and night together.
One time, Yoshi caught Sanosuke talking and smiling by himself.
"Ne, Kaoru."said Yoshi.
"Yes?"
"I just noticed Sanousuke talking to himself a lot lately" Yoshi said his eyes pointed to Sanosuke's direction who was smiling by himself under a Sakura tree.
"well, at least he's happy…" Kaoru said with a wink. "it worries me more to see him so down and out because it's just so not him. We should be thankful he's smiling now. Although I just never saw him smile that way before. He usually grins and act naughty, am I right, Yoshi?"
"right, he looks more peaceful now, I think"
"Sayo?"
"yes?"
"arigato…"
"huh? What for?"
"for staying with me…you know, I could just look at your face and all my sorrows melt away." Sanosuke said.

P.S: I wonder why Sano never settled down in the end. Perhaps Sayo could still be in his heart? 'till then! Sayonara!
