1-Bree

Bree Tanner looked paid for her sandwich using the last of the money she'd managed to steal 2 days ago. All she could afford was a cheese sandwich. She took the last empty table, and sat there, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible.

It had been three weeks of this. Mostly she'd eaten out of garbage cans. She was a bad thief-she'd hardly been able to steal food or money. She knew she had to make the money and the food last. Although it was tempting to eat the sandwich as quick as possible, she knew it was better to eat it slowly.

Well, her father had been right about one thing. She'd run away from home, and now she was starving.

I'm an idiot. She thought. I should have waited until I got my drivers license.

"May I sit here? Everywhere else is full."

Bree looked up. The boy who'd spoken was about eighteenish-only a few months older than her. His skin was chalky pale, with blonde hair. He wore sunglasses covering his eyes.

But they've got to be the best eyes I've ever seen.

Bree shrugged and took another bite of her sandwich. The boy sat down.

"You seem hungry." he said.

"Yeah." Bree agreed.

The boy nodded. "I see...I'm Riley, by the way. Riley Biers."

"I'm Bree." Bree replied. "How come you're wearing sunglasses?"

Riley laughed. "I have a rare eye condition."

"I'm sure your eyes are nice." Bree said.

"Oh, they look normal. But they just hurt in the light." Riley shrugged. "So, hey. How come you're so hungry?"

Bree looked down, embarrassed. "I ran away." she confessed.

"Really?" Riley answered. "How come?"

"My father was abusive." Bree answered. "I couldn't stand it anymore, so I ran away from him."

"Your mom didn't stop him?" Riley said.

"She'd already left him. She left me there." Bree said. "I never see her anymore."

Riley nodded. "I see. You don't want to go back then?"

"No." Bree said. "I can't. If I go back there, he'll-he'll kill me."

"Don't worry." Riley sighed. "I won't send you back. But you still can't run around the streets on your own like this. They're dangerous. Anything could happen."

Bree nodded. "I know that now."

"Look, I have a friend who could help you out." Riley said. "She helps out people like that. Gives them a new life. Right now, though, you look like you need to eat."

There was something about Riley that was different, that she didn't like. Still, she was marvelling at his inhuman beauty, wanting to believe that his friend could help her, because she had nothing left.

"Want a burger, kid?"

Riley smiled, the most beautiful smile Bree had ever seen. She nodded eagerky, discarding the cheese sandwich, and following him out to his car.
