Summary: Sai knew, but he didn't want to.

Worst of the Best

Sai sat reading scrolls at the table, drawing, planning…

Anything but thinking.

Soft hair brushed his check as Naruto settled behind him, the blonde's chin on his shoulder.

"Whatcha' doing?" It was meaningless small talk and they both knew it so Sai didn't answer, continuing to sit stiffly over the scrolls.

Naruto smiled sadly and let the silence stretch on. He turned so he was more facing Sai's neck and slumped a bit, resting his cheek on Sai's shoulder.

The raven broke the silence.

"You're going to die fighting him."

"Yeah." Sai clenched his eyes together so tight they burned and watered. "You knew that from the beginning."

The former Root ninja turned so he could just feel the soft brush of Naruto's hair against his face and closed his eyes, all pretenses gone.

"...Yeah."

Sai took in the sensation of Naruto's gentle smile against his neck, cataloging the moment as the blonde's tears ran down his back.
