The Question

I am the question. Allah is the answer.

So the mystics have taught, and so I have spoken every day of my life. Where I go, he is with me. He is the God of my fathers, and he would have been the God of my sons, had I ever married.

But Allah has deserted me.

"Two of your boys are already dead," the man said. "How much faith do you have left?"

A man found himself and his three nephews lost on a deserted island. The first boy died, and the man grieved, but did not lose faith. The second boy died, and again, the man grieved, but still did not lose faith. And what of the third boy? How long before God is satisfied with the man's faith?

I am the question. Allah is the answer.

He has taken Ali. Is he laughing at me? He has taken Hassan. Does God smile to see my faith unshaken? Shall he take Suleiman from me next? Then, oh, then he will see a faith of rock, of iron, of hardest ice. He wishes to break me, but I will never satisfy him.

"I absolutely believe in God," he said. "And I absolutely hate the fucker."

My faith is my defiance.

I am the question.
