As that car rode off, my heart sank. They took my child, my baby. Why did they take him? I would rather have been thrown in that fire than for my precious child to be snatched from us. What would they do to him? Was he afraid? He was only 8. He had to be afraid. Was he calling for me? Was he calling for Rick to save him? If they harmed one hair on his head... if they hurt my child, I would hunt them through the gates of hell.
When I saw the bridge rising, I felt as if I was suffocating. I willed it all to be a dream, a horrible nightmare. I willed myself to wake up in my bed with Rick holding me, with Alex coming in to tell me he was hungry. But I would not wake up. Because it was not a dream. It was a nightmare and I was living it.
When I could no longer see the car that held my child, I felt like my world had come to an end. My child was gone. My heart cried for him but he did not answer. I was out of breath when I reached bridge booth. I yanked the lever down and the bridge slowly descended. I saw Rick pulling himself up on the other side. I could not seem to move as I looked down that dark, empty street. Rick was looking down that same dark, empty street. I began to cry my heart out. My child was gone.
Rick heard me and turned. I saw the tears in his eyes and he saw mine.
"Riiicckk" I moaned in anguish as my tears rushed down my cheeks.
He ran to me and pulled me into his arms. We held on to each other for dear life and tried to give to the other strength. Rick proved stronger than I.
"Riiiccckkk!!" I cried out in anguish as I held him tight. "He's gone..."
"Shhh" Rick said and held me tighter.
"He's gone... He's gone... He's gone..." I cried hysterically.
"We'll get him back Evy. We'll get him back. I promise" Rick said but I did not hear him. My child was gone.
"aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!" I cried out as my heart broke painfully into pieces. "Where is he?? Where is he??" I demanded to know but my question went unanswered.
"Evy, we'll get him back" Rick tried to calm me. "I promise you" he said sincerely.
"I want him back now!!! RIGHT NOW!!!" I yelled. "What if they hurt him Rick??" I could not stand that thought but it tormented me. "What if they..."
"EVELYN!" Rick grabbed me by my shoulders and shook me. The legionnaire in him surfaced and took charged. "EVELYN! LOOK AT ME" he demanded when I continued to cry hysterically. "LOOK AT ME DAMN IT!!"
When I finally looked at him through tear-laden eyes, he was frowning at me but I could see the love... and hurt in his eyes. He was hurting just as I was but he knew crying would not bring our son back.
"We HAVE to stay strong!" he insisted. "For Alex" he said in a softer tone. "I promise you, Evy" he choked and I could see his tears fighting to be released. "We'll get him back."
Then I saw the determination in his eyes. His strength wrapped itself around me and gave me comfort. I knew then that he would move heaven, hell and earth to get my son, his son, our son back. Then he wiped my tears away, pulled me back into his arms and held me. I held on to my strength and refused to let my tears start again. Rick had promised to get my child back and I knew he would.
