The red dragon dropped out of the sky, wearily. The boy whom she loved, slid off her back and looked around. She watched him walk away muttering to himself. Some of those mutterings she understood: "up", "down", "stand". Those she understood. More she understood his tone of voice. He always gentled it when he spoke to her.
She walked over to the edge of the grass and lay down on the sand there to soak up the sun rays beating down on them. She lay her wings flat so that she could be warmed thoroughly. Her boy kept walking around and muttering. Avatre knew that he missed the other human and dragon that they had seen weeks ago.
She didn't understand why they couldn't have traveled together. Still her boy had guided her away from the others and she trusted him to know why.
Still she didn't like this new place it made her feel uneasy. She could tell her boy was uneasy as well. A movement caught the corner of her eye. Her boy was the other direction. She looked and saw the ripe juicy shape of a deer coming cautiously out of the bush. She lay there without batting an eye waiting for it to get closer. When it was close enough her head shot out and snapped the deer's neck with a powerful closing of her jaws.
Her boy whipped around and saw the deer dangling from her mouth. Saying more of those sounds she didn't understand he came closer to her, holding out his foreleg. She dropped the carcass and watched as he took off a large hunk with his metal tooth that he carried. Then he backed away and allowed her to start ripping into the meat. She quickly bolted down the meat and gnawed on the bones until they were clean.
She flopped down into the sand again and immediately fell asleep.
She awoke to feel her boy laying next to her, absently stroking her side with an oiled rag. She sighed gustily, enjoying his stroking.
The next morning, men found them. Men that shouted at her boy and tried to take her captive. She reared to her feet and put herself between her boy and those strange men. She snapped at one who dared come too close. Her boy spoke softly to her, saying things she didn't understand. Still she understood, he was asking her to step away from these others. She stood down but kept a wary eye on them.
There was more words between the others and her boy. She didn't like it but kept her mouth closed. Still more words she didn't understand. Then her boy stood and gave her the command to stand as well. She had been fed earlier and was more than willing to fly now.
She and her boy flew over more green ground. Then she felt a tug on her reins and she landed as he wanted. They were quickly surrounded by more people until she lashed out with her tail and her head telling them she did not want them too close. They all accordingly backed off.
Her boy led her to a place that looked familiar though it was new to her. A large sand pit was there warm enough to make her sigh in contentment. As well a barrow of food quickly appeared near her. She bolted down the hunks, happily. Her boy stood talking to the other men while she ate.
Finally, they were alone. He walked over to her. She felt his hand against her and knew they were home.

For those of you who don't recognize it, this is a little ficcie based on Mercedes Lackey's new book: Joust. So yes this is in the right place.
