This is an excerpt from Amulet: The Last Council
"Come on, we better go find the others," I said as I peered over a rock.
"I'd rather not, if you know what I mean," Max said hesitantly, following me over the rocky ground.
I looked over my shoulder at him. "Why do they have it out for you?"
Max caught up with me easily. "I guess I didn't tell them the whole truth," he averts his eyes to the ground. "I didn't tell them what it would be like here."
"What were they expecting?" I asked, stepping over a pile of crumbling rocks. "A regular school?"
"Not everyone is as resilient as you are, Emily," Max said, looking at me admiringly. "They aren't willing to face difficult challenges." he smiles at me. "It's what makes you special."
I looked over at him, slightly disapproving. "Well, the one thing I learned about difficult challenges is that you don't want to face them alone. We're going to need the others' help whether you like it or not."
I turned around a large boulder. "And don't flatter me. It makes me feel weird."
