He Pines
He pines. That is what he has always done. It's not a new process. He wanted a job on the police force, pined for it, worked for it, and he got it. He wanted a wife, pined for someone to love and got that too. He pined for children and now he has two beautiful kids to call him dad. But he wanted more. He always wanted more. He wanted it all, to have his cake and a side of honey too. He wanted it all with HER. Brenda Lee Johnson. She was the one he pined for the most, the hardest. He had her for a time as a lover, the other woman, the side of honey. He was content until she stepped out of his reach. She moved beyond him. Still he pined for her, loved her perhaps too much.
Now, year's later, she stands before him, back in his life. He needs her to do a job. He needs her in a work capacity. Deep down he still pines for her, still needs her, still loves her more than anything, and deep down he dieing to get back with her. She is his constant and so he pines longer, and harder than he ever has before, for anything that he has ever wanted. But she knows his longings, his pinings. She resists his attempts to rekindle what was, brushes off his advances with ease and a casual shrug of a delicate shoulder. She has found someone new, someone she pines for, and as much as she cares for him, as a friend she says, she loves the one she pines for like he pines for her.
He knows he'll never have her back now, but that doesn't stop him from trying and that doesn't stop his pining. He thinks that maybe, just maybe, the one she loves will leave her and he'll be there to love her. He uses this excuse to justify why he still pines for things he cannot have.
