An anguished sigh escaped Gil Grissom's lips as he sat in the ER waiting room waiting for news on Sara's condition. The wait had given him ample time to think about what had happened and what could have happened. It was the latter that truly frightened him. If Natalie had been stalking him, then why did she kidnap Sara instead of ... ?

"How's she doing?"

Grissom looked up to see the concerned face of Sofia Curtis. She handed him a Styrofoam cup of coffee and sat down next to the CSI supervisor.

"I don't know yet," he replied. "They're still working on her."

Sofia was quiet for a moment, just sipping her coffee and thinking. Looking over at Grissom's haggard face, she could almost swear that the man had aged a year for every hour they had spent looking for Sara. And she was fairly certain that was due to his feeling responsible for what had happened.

"Sara's strong," Sofia finally said, trying to be of some comfort. "If anyone can bounce back from this, she can."

Grissom didn't even hear her. He stared straight ahead as he said, "The only reason I even touched Sara at that DUI was because she had bumped her arm earlier that evening and told me it was hurting some. She never complains about pain, so I was concerned. I was feeling to see if there was a bruise or a knot."

"Sorry?"

The detective's confused question caused Grissom to realize that Sofia may not have heard why Natalie picked Sara as her victim. He had been so caught up in trying to find Sara he wasn't even sure how much Brass had told the other detectives and officers about the situation.

"We discovered that Natalie was at a DUI scene a few weeks ago and we think she saw me touch Sara's arm and somehow came to the conclusion that we were in a relationship," he explained. "She held me responsible for the death of the only person she ever loved, so she thought she was going to take away the only woman I ever loved."

Sofia pondered that information. "So she must have only followed you to crime scenes. If she had ever followed you during your off work hours, she would've ... "

"... targeted you," Grissom completed Sofia's thought. He then reached out and grasped her free hand. "The only woman I truly love."
