The God Complex
He knew he shouldn't look, but the number one the door, the brass eleven, loomed large in his view. And as his hand touched the doorknob he was determined to not open it. But he did.
The door seemed to open in slow motion, everything slowing down to a fraction of a second. It opened painfully slowly, and as the door turned on its hinge with each passing degree he felt his dread growing ever deeper. He had a feeling on what was on the other side of the door.
He looked on the other side of the door.
And there she was.
She smiled at him, the tip of her tongue sticking out from between the corner of her teeth. She gave him a coy smile from where she sat on the edge of the bed, wearing jeans and Union Jack t-shirt, accompanied with boots and a black leather jacket.
She said nothing.
She didn't have to say anything.
She had never needed to say anything.
All she had to do was flash him that smile and he would do anything for her. Even follow her unto his own death.
But also, standing next to her, was a daft old face that he would recognize anywhere. The face that he'd worn when he'd first found her. When he'd first fallen in love with her. The face that he feared the most because he knew that it was his truest form; his most honest form.
The man in the leather coat simply looked at him and raised an eyebrow as he placed a protective hand over the young woman's shoulder.
The man he was most afraid of along with the woman he was most afraid of.
He watched the man lean down as the young woman turned her head and they shared a soft, loving kiss, the man's hand lingering in her hair, her hand along his jaw.
The biggest fear of his life.
The he'd lost his one chance at happiness. She had been the one girl who had been willing to leave everything behind to be with him. The one girl who had captured both of his hearts and held them captive over the long years of his existence, through time and space and parallel worlds, and regeneration after regeneration.
Neither of them looked back at him, lost in looking at each other, and his gaze went dark.
"Of course it would be you."
And he closed the door.
THE END
A.N. - I just watched the episode "The God Complex" and as soon as I saw the Doctor look into the room and they didn't show us what he saw, I jumped at the chance to put a Nine/Rose spin on the situation! Because the word "you" can also be plural. LOVED writing this! Hope you enjoy it!
