Bored on one long summers afternoon in Volterra, Jane decided to play the beautiful grand piano in the ballroom for a bit of practice. The sunlight blazed through the curtains sending rainbow patterns and dust motes through the barely used room. The piano sat on a platform on the stage, so she climbed up and onto the tall seat where her feet barely touched the pedals. Jane launched into playing her favourite composer Tchaikovsky's Seasons "Autumn Harvest."
She was so absorbed in playing that she didn't react to a disturbance behind her.
She finished the finale dramatically and smiled. She looked around and blinked up at Aro, who had been listening.
"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind flight to the imagination and life to everything." He sighed happily.
"Plato." She whispered automatically, then clapped and hand over her mouth and giggled. She had been absorbed with the library lately, which was unusual. It was more Alec's thing. Jane had been especially interested in the works of philosophers. It wasn't too easy that is was monotonous, but not too to boring so that she became tired of it quickly, for example the Latin dictionary, even though she had a thorough understanding of Latin.
"You are becoming more talented everyday, Jane. It's a wonder why you aren't in school." He mused.
Jane poked her tongue out in disgust at the thought of school, especially uniforms. She much preferred her usual gold locket, white shirt, purple dress, shiny black shoes and white socks. And you had to have your hair tied up. Jane's hair was long and she liked it that way. It had taken her whole human life to get it that long, why waste that? She thought that it was unfortunate that children spent so much time there when the real lessons in life couldn't even be taught anyway.
"Why would I bother with school, especially with these?" She laughed while gesturing at her bright red eyes, lit from a feed earlier this morning.
"You have a point..." Aro smiled. He then left to leave her to her own devices as she started "Chopin Nocturne in F-sharp."
Later that evening, deciding to do something with her brother since they hadn't spent time together in almost six hours, Jane knocked on Alec's door.
"Come in." he muttered, concentrating madly as he painted a horrifying and accurate picture of the Volturi feeding, yet it was oddly beautiful because of the painstaking work on his canvas using small precise strokes. But once he looked up and saw it was Jane, his focused face broke into a huge smile.
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
"I think I am." He answered grinning wickedly.
They raced each other outside into the garden, which was safe as the sun was just setting over the mountains.
Jane and Alec practised their combat (minus their powers of course to stop advantages, though Alec did sneak it one time) in rounds of four then added their total scores to a tally they had carved on the stone wall over a hundred years ago into surrounding the garden.
After many hours later, as the dawn began to break, they got bored of and instead practised their powers on intruding wildlife in the hedges, a favourite past time of Janes'. Unknown to them, the three elders watched from the tallest tower in amusement at their youngest physically, yet cruellest assets to the guard.
