Dog of the Military: Chapter 1

DISCLAIMER: I don't own FullMetal Alchemist. I'm just a dork!

The train that had been speeding south towards Dublith lurched to a stop. A boy, who was lying across one of the seats in the tiny, shared compartment started. " Big brother, why did we stop?" asked his travel companion, what appeared to be an enormous talking suit of armor. "I don't know Alphonse," he answered. Just then, as if God-or some other magical otherworldly being was somehow listening- the conductor looked in their compartment. "Uh, folks, we have appeared to be experiencing some technical difficulties. It might take us a couple of hours or so to fix the problem." "THAT DIDN'T EXPLAIN ANYTHING!!!" the golden-haired boy exclaimed. "Ed, calm down. We can explore the town for a while" said Alphonse. "Fine. Let's just go." said Edward Elrich as he grabbed their luggage and stormed out of the compartment. "Is he always like that?" asked the bewildered conductor. "It's something you get used to." said Alphonse.

They stepped out on the platform. The town was picturesque- little row houses painted soft ice-creamy colors. Storefront windows gleamed, enticing smells floated from the bakery. A faint tune came from the plaza. People everywhere. Shopping. Talking. Or just standing and waiting for the next train.

The pair made their way slowly through the huge throngs of people. "I can't believe that there are this many people in this tiny town." said Ed. "It's a little bit like Resembool, isn't it?" replied Alphonse. "Yeah, I guess. I just want to know what they are all staring at." Suddenly, the waves of people parted, revealing a cellist, her open case in front, containing a hodgepodge of bills and coins. "Brother, look" said Alphonse, pointing to a transfiguration circle scratched into the golden-colored wood of the instrument. "Yeah, I've never heard of anyone doing alchemy with sound before." Ed sounded mystified. "She's good, isn't she?" said Alphonse. "Yeah. Wonder what you have to do to transfigure sound." "I was talking about the music." The cellist played a mixture of styles-baroque songs, modern tunes, children's lullabies.

After some time had passed, and the mass of people had thinned out some, Ed and Al where able to approach the cellist, who was preoccupied with shoving the money into her pockets and packing up her instrument. "Excuse me, but how do you transfigure sound?" asked Ed. The girl glanced up at the alchemist before returning to her work. "What my brother meant to say is that you play very well." The cellist finished tightening the straps on her case before actually looking up at the pair. "Thanks," she said, brushing a strand of copper hair out of her face. "Travelers, huh. Where are you going?" "That doesn't-" "Dublith." interjected Alphonse. "Well, tell ya what. I'm heading to Dublith myself. Pay for my ticket and I'll tell you how to transfigure sound." "WHAT!" shouted Ed. "We don't even know your name!" The girl fixed her eyes on Ed's golden ones. The effect was alarming- the left eye was silver-gray. But the right one was bright yellow. Like the kind found on foxes. "It's Laine. So, now that you know my name do you still want to know how to transmute sound?" "Fine." Ed glowered. As he slumped off to the train station, Al looked back at their new companion, who was slinging a canvas bag over her shoulder. "It's a gift," she said. She pulled straps of her case tight and slung it over her shoulder. "I'm Alphonse." "Charmed." They made their way toward the train platform. "Is he always like that?"

"Oh, you'll get used to it."
